Andrew Gold SongsOur Top 10 Andrew Gold Songs list takes a look at the career of one of Classic Rock’s most versatile talents. In a similar fashion to Todd Rundgren, Andrew Gold was a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the band Bryndle. The band Bryndle also featured musicians and songwriters Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, and Kenny Edwards.

During the 1970s, Andrew Gold played a major role in the career of Linda Ronstadt. He was a member of Linda Ronstadt’s band but also played a key role in the studio. As a multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Gold’s musical skills are defined on so many many of Linda Ronstadt’s recordings. Andrew Gold’s talents were also appreciated beyond the Linda Ronstadt camp. Andrew Gold recorded with many of the pioneers of early 1970s soft rock such as James Taylor, Carly Simon, America, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, and many others.

In 1975, Andrew Gold released his first solo album entitled Andrew Gold. He followed that abum up with his sophomore release entitled What’s Wrong with This Picture? The album was released in 1976. It would contain the song “Lonely Boy,” which would become the biggest hit of Andrew Gold’s career. Andre Gold released his third album in 1978 entitled All This and Heaven Too. That album also featured a great selection of singles including the second biggest hit of Andrew Gold’s career entitled “Thank You For Being A Friend.” 

Andrew Gold would release one more solo album for the time being before moving onto other projects. In 1980, he released the album Whirlwind. For the rest of the 1980s, Andrew Gold would form the band Wax with musician and songwriter Graham Gouldman who had previously been a member of the band 10CC. Graham Gouldman had also written some of Classic Rock’s biggest hits including The Yardbirds “For Your Love.” 

In the 1990s, Andrew Gold continued to release solo albums. In 1996 he released the fun Halloween album entitled Halloween Howls under the name Andrew Gold & Friends. In 1997, Andrew Gold released the record Greetings from Planet Love” (as The Fraternal Order of All). 1998 saw the release of Andrew Gold’s ….Since 1951 album. Andrew Gold would release three more studio albums entitled Warm Breezes in 1999, The Spence Manor Suite in 2000, Intermission in 2002 and Copy Cat in 2008. Sadly, Andrew Gold passed away in 2011 at the age of 59. He left behind a legacy of solo albums and wonderful singles. Besides the great Andrew Gold songs left behind, are also the great recordings he played on with so many rock legends.

We open up our top 10 Andrew Gold songs list with the opening track from the album What’s Wrong with This Picture? The album was released in 1976. It was Andrew Gold’s second album. The song “Hope You Feel Good,” was composed by Andrew Gold and Steve Ferguson.

# 9 – Spooky Scary Skeletons

This great novelty song was released in 1996 on the album Halloween Howls. The record is a rare Halloween album featuring some of pop music’s most loved artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Bishop, David Cassidy and of course Andrew Gold.

# 8 – Mad About You (the Final Frontier)

Many of Andrew Gold’s songs have become ingrained in the history of Pop Culture. Andrew Gold sang the theme song from the television series Mad About You. The show aired on NBC from 1992 to 1999. Mad About You starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser.

# 7 – Kiss This One Goodbye

“Kiss This One Goodbye,” was the opening track on Andrew Gold’s album entitled Whirlwind. The album was released in 1980. At the time it would become Andrew Gold’s fourth album release. The song was released at a time when new wave bands like The Cars and Blondie were dominating radio with a fresh new sound. This one is interesting to listen to based on the time period it was released. It doesn’t sound like new wave, yet there was an element of the changing times present.

# 6 – I’m On My Way

Andrew Gould’s “I’m On My Way,” was released on his All This and Heaven Too album. The record was released in 1978. “I’m On My Way,” was written by Mark Safan. The song was released as the album’s second single.

# 5 – Bridge To Your Heart

“Bridge To Your Heart,” was a song written by Andrew Gold and legendary songwriter and former member of 10cc Graham Gouldman. The song was recorded for Andrew Gold and Graham Gouldman’s band Wax. The song was a top 20 hit in the U.K. and a top 50 hit in the U.S. for the group. It was released in 1987. It was issued on the album American English.

# 4 – How Can This Be Love

The great Andrew Gold song “How Can This Be Love,” was the opening track on Andrew Gold’s third album entitled All This and Heaven Too. The album was released in 1978. The song “How Can This Be Love,” was composed by Mark Safan and Mark Goldenberg. The song was released as the album’s first single.

# 3 – Never Let Her Slip Away

Andrew Gold’s song “Never Let Her Slip Away,” was the fourth single released from his third album All This and Heaven Too. What is notable about this song is the fact that Queen’s Freddie Mercury sang backup vocals on the track. At the time, Freddie Mercury went uncredited for his contributions to the song.

# 2 – Thank You For Being A Friend

As we close in on the number one spot on our top 10 Andrew Gold songs list, we encounter the two most famous Andrew Gold songs in the artist’s catalog. “Thank You for Being a Friend” was the third single released from the All This and Heaven Too album. The song was a big hit in the United States in 1978 reaching the Billboard top 25. Many people remember it as the theme song to the television show Golden Girls. The television version was sung by Cynthia Fee,

# 1 – Lonely Boy

One of the all-time great hit singles of the 1970s Classic Rock era was Andrew Gold’s “Lonely Boy.” The song was released on the album What’s Wrong with This Picture?  The album was released in 1976. “Lonely Boy,” was Andrew Gold’s biggest hit. The song reached the Billboard Top Ten in 1976 peaking at number seven.
