Our top 10 Spencer Davis Group songs list takes a look at a British rock band formed in the early 1960s in Birmingham, England. The Spencer Davis Group was formed by Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood, Muff Winwood, and Pete York. The group was discovered by Chris Blackwell of Island Records, who saw them performing in a nightclub. The first album was released in 1965 on the Fontana label. One year later, in 1966, the Spencer Davis group released their second album, appropriately titled The Second Album. On the album was a cover version of Jackie Edwards’ song “Keep On Running.” The song hit number one on the United Kingdom pop charts. The Spencer Davis band had arrived.

The band’s third album was entitled Autumn 66. The album was only released in the United Kingdom. In 1968, the Spencer Davis group released the album With Their New Face On. The album did not feature Steve Winwood, who had left the band to form the group Traffic. Minus Steve Winwood, the band’s glory days were soon over. The group continued to release albums into the 1970s but had nowhere near their success with Steve Winwood at the helm.

Our top 10 Spencer Davis group songs presents 10 of their finest songs.

# 10 – This Hammer

We open our Top 10 Spencer Davis Group songs list with the excellent track “This Hammer.” The song appeared on the band’s second album entitled The Second Album. “This Hammer” was written by all four band members.

# 9 -Together Till The End Of Time

The beautiful song “Together Till The End Of Time” was the opening track on the band’s Autumn 66 album. The record was released in 1966. The song was written by Frank Edward Wilson, who also wrote songs for Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and many other legendary Motown artists.

# 8 – Every Little Bit Hurts

The great recording of the Ed Cobb song “Every Little Bit Hurts” was released on the Spencer Davis Group’s first album in 1965. The song was originally a hit for Brenda Holloway in 1964. Steve Winwood delivers an incredible soulful vocal on this remarkable recording.

# 7 – When I Come Home

Continuing with our top 10 Spencer Davis Group songs list, we turn to a classic track from their 1966 album entitled Autumn ’66. The song “When I Come Home” was written by Jackie Edwards and Steve Winwood.

# 6 – Watch Your Step

The Spencer Davis Group song ‘Watch Your Step” is one of Classic Rock History’s most influential early rock records. Listen to the similarity between the Spencer Davis Group song “Watch Your Step” and The Beatles “I Feel Fine” or Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick.” Pretty interesting! Bobby Parker wrote the song. If you think that the Allman Brothers song “One Way Out” was an original Allman Brothers song, take another listen to “Watch Your Step.”

# 5 – Time Seller

The Spencer Davis Group song “Time Seller” is one of the only Spencer Davis Group songs on this list that does not feature Steve Winwood. The song was released on the band’s 1968 album, With Their New Face On. The 1968 psychedelic sound is evident on this cool Spencer Davis Group song. “Time Seller” was written by Spencer Davis and Eddie Hardin. The song was also released as the album’s first single.

# 4 – Keep On Running

The Spencer Davis Group song “Keep On Running” was released on the band’s first album in 1965. It was the band’s first number one hit in the United Kingdom. However, the song did not do that well in the United States as the song peaked at only number 76 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

# 3 – Somebody Help Me

After the success of their number one hit record “Keep On Running,” the Spencer Davis Group released the song “Somebody Help Me.” The song hit number one on the United Kingdom music charts in 1966. It did better in the United States than their previous single had done. “Somebody Help Me” reached number 47 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

# 2 – Gimme Some Lovin’

Not many people on the planet have heard the Spencer Davis Group song Gimme Some Lovin’. It’s probably all that needs to be said. The song was written by Steve Winwood, Spencer Davis, and Muff Winwood. It was the band’s highest charting single in the United States, peaking at number 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

# 1 – I’m A Man

While the great song “Gimme Some Lovin’‘ might have been the band’s highest charting single, this phenomenal piece of music was not that far behind on the charts. “I’m A Man” reached the number 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Nonetheless, the song defined the band’s brilliance in so many ways. It is one of the truly great rock songs of the classic rock era. The song was also recorded by Chicago and released on the group’s debut album.
