Our Top 10 Lovin’ Spoonful Songs list looks at a band whose original hit-making run was somewhat short-lived yet managed to produce some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s. The original group was together for only a few years, but in that time the Lovin’ Spoonful released five conventional studio albums and two soundtrack albums. The band later returned to the stage, and in 2026 the Lovin’ Spoonful continues touring with founding bassist Steve Boone alongside Jeff Alan Ross, Bill Cinque, Rob Bonfiglio, and Mike Arturi.

The Lovin’ Spoonful released their first album in 1965, entitled Do You Believe in Magic. The album featured John Sebastian on vocals, guitar, and harmonica, Steve Boone on bass and vocals, Joe Butler on drums and vocals, and Zal Yanovsky on guitar and vocals. The band released their second album in 1966, entitled Daydream. The album featured the same lineup as their debut. In 1966, the band also performed instrumental music on the soundtrack to the Woody Allen film What’s Up, Tiger Lily?

The Lovin’ Spoonful released their third conventional studio album in 1966 and fourth album overall, entitled Hums of the Lovin’ Spoonful. In 1967, the Lovin’ Spoonful released their second soundtrack album. The score to the Francis Ford Coppola film You’re a Big Boy Now featured the hit single “Darling Be Home Soon.”

In 1967, the Lovin’ Spoonful also released their album Everything Playing. The album featured a personnel change, with Jerry Yester replacing Zal Yanovsky on guitar. Everything Playing would also be the last Lovin’ Spoonful album to feature John Sebastian. The Lovin’ Spoonful would record only one more studio album after its release.

Revelation: Revolution ’69 was released in 1968. Although it carried the Lovin’ Spoonful name, Joe Butler was the only band member who performed on the album, backed by session musicians. It would be the final studio album released under the Lovin’ Spoonful name. John Sebastian had begun a solo career and found himself with a huge hit in the mid-1970s with the song “Welcome Back.” It was the theme song to the television show Welcome Back, Kotter.

# 10 – Close Your Eyes

We open our top 10 Lovin’ Spoonful songs list with a track from the Everything Playing album. There is probably a good reason why the song was placed as the album’s closing track. The song is a bit of an outlier in the band’s catalog. However, the song seems to hint at a new direction the band may have headed in. Ultimately, it was one of the final songs fans heard from the band during John Sebastian’s tenure, as Everything Playing would be the band’s swan song with Sebastian.

# 9 – Younger Girl

“Younger Girl” was a song released on the Lovin’ Spoonful’s debut album Do You Believe in Magic. The song was written by John Sebastian. The Lovin’ Spoonful did not release the song as a U.S. single, but it has since become one of the deep tracks loved by Lovin’ Spoonful fans.

# 8 – She Is Still a Mystery

The fabulous Lovin’ Spoonful song “She Is Still a Mystery” was released on the band’s Everything Playing album. The song was the album’s opening track. “She Is Still a Mystery” was released as a single and reached number twenty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
