Dream Theater’s live cover version of Pink Floyd’s “Time,” is inexplicably one of the most memorable performances of the classic track ever performed by a band other than Pink Floyd. From the opening moments of the performance, one would never know they were not listening to Pink Floyd. As the sound of the clocks fade away, the drum fills, and electric guitar licks reproduce in almost exact fashion the introduction to Time.  It is only the keyboards that seem to augment the original opening lines.  From the lead vocals to the instrumentation, Dream Theater is nailing Pink Floyd’s “Time,” in an alarming fashion.

Just when you think it can’t get any better, Dream Theater’s guitarist John Petrucci rips into the heart of the song with a guitar solo that pays complete homage to the original. However, musicians can always replicate note-for-note solos. It is the artistry of the individual musician that elevates a transcribed solo into their own musical identity. John Petrucci’s phrasing of the iconic “Time,” solo is a wonder to hear. While the band’s performance of “Time,” is a great joy in itself, it was John Petrucci’s solo that makes this performance a must-hear.

Dream Theater was first formed in 1985. The original founding members were John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy. Since 1985, the band has released twelve albums and are still touring and performing. The band has successfully blended the concepts of metal within the genres of progressive music which has earned them an extremely loyal following.

In many ways, the band is incredibly underrated in the overall scheme of music history. If a band like Dream Theatre had arrived on the scene in the 1970s during the progressive rock era, they would have become huge along sides such as progressive rock masters as Yes and King Crimson. Then of course it was those bands who seem to have inspired Dream Theater along with the metal sounds of bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Dream Theatre are truly the product of a group of musicians who are huge fans of classic rock and its many styles.
