The Pixies Albums

Pixies formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986 and became one of the most influential alternative rock bands of their generation. The original lineup featured Black Francis on vocals and rhythm guitar, Joey Santiago on lead guitar, Kim Deal on bass and vocals, and David Lovering on drums. Their combination of surreal lyrics, abrasive guitar, surf music, melodic pop, and sudden shifts between quiet verses and explosive choruses left a lasting mark on independent and mainstream rock.

The group released the eight-song mini-album Come On Pilgrim in 1987, followed by four studio albums before breaking up in the early 1990s. Pixies reunited for touring in 2004 and returned to recording a decade later. Their second era produced five additional studio albums, beginning with Indie Cindy and continuing through The Night the Zombies Came.

The current lineup consists of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, David Lovering, and bassist and vocalist Emma Richardson. Richardson joined in 2024 and made her Pixies recording debut on The Night the Zombies Came. This complete list presents the band’s mini-album and nine studio albums in chronological order, with release information and complete standard-edition track listings.

Come On Pilgrim

Released: September 28, 1987

Come On Pilgrim was Pixies’ first official release. The eight-song mini-album was assembled from recordings made during the band’s seventeen-track demo session commonly known as the Purple Tape. Its compact running time introduced Black Francis’ surreal writing, Joey Santiago’s jagged guitar, Kim Deal’s harmonies, and David Lovering’s direct rhythmic attack.

“Caribou,” “Vamos,” “The Holiday Song,” and “Nimrod’s Son” established themes and musical contrasts that the band would continue exploring throughout its original run. Although often grouped with the studio albums, Come On Pilgrim is properly categorized as a mini-LP.

CD Track Listings:

  2. “Vamos” – 2:53
  3. “Isla de Encanta” – 1:41

The album also placed Kim Deal’s voice at the center of “Gigantic,” which she co-wrote with Black Francis.

“Bone Machine,” “Break My Body,” “Where Is My Mind?,” “Cactus,” and the newly recorded version of “Vamos” became essential parts of the band’s catalog. The album’s sound and production influenced countless alternative rock musicians during the following decade.

Pixies worked with producer Gil Norton on Doolittle, bringing greater clarity and scale to the band’s sound without sacrificing its eccentricity. The album moved rapidly between violence, biblical imagery, environmental catastrophe, romance, humor, and fragmented storytelling.

“Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation”, “Here Comes Your Man,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” “Hey,” and “Gouge Away” helped turn Doolittle into the band’s commercial breakthrough and one of the most celebrated alternative rock albums of the 1980s.

The album included “Planet of Sound,” “Alec Eiffel,” “U-Mass,” “Motorway to Roswell,” and a cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On.” Keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman contributed throughout the record, expanding the arrangements around Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal, and David Lovering.

Kim Deal left the group while the new recordings were being developed. Simon “Dingo” Archer played bass during the sessions, and Paz Lenchantin joined the touring lineup before the album’s release. “Bagboy,” “Greens and Blues,” “Blue Eyed Hexe,” and the title track introduced the second recording era of Pixies.

Producer Tom Dalgety returned, and the sessions were documented through the twelve-part series It’s a Pixies Podcast.
