Our Top 10 Blackfoot Songs looks at a fantastic southern rock band that released some great music in the latter part of the 20th century. Blackfoot is one of those great classic rock and roll bands who maintained a loyal following but never really achieved mass cultural success like their contemporary southern rock bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, The Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, and even groups like 38 Special or Molly Hatchet. The sound of Blackfoot very much echoed the style of Lynyrd Skynyrd. There is a good reason for that besides the popularity of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Blackfoot’s original bandleader, lead singer, guitarist Rickey Medlocke, and bassist Greg T. Walker had become members of Lynyrd Skynyrd during the band’s early days in 1971. Eventually, Medlocke and Walker would leave Lynyrd Skynyrd and form the band Blackfoot that they had initially been working on. After a few ar years of dealing with some personal issues and medical problems among members of the band Blackfoot, the band signed a record deal. Blackfoot released their first album in 1975 entitled No Reservations. They followed up that album a year later in 1976, releasing the LP Flyin’ High.

In 1979, Blackfoot released the album Strikes. This would be the band’s most successful album as it was their first and only album to go platinum. The band would head into the 1980s with a release schedule defining the most prolific period of their career. In 1980, they released the album Tomcattin’. In 1981, Blackfoot issued the album Marauder; the LP Siogo was released in 1982; in 1984, Vertical Smiles  was released; and their final album of the decade was released in 1987, entitled Rick Medlocke and Blackfoot.

Blackfoot released two albums in the 1990s. At the dawn of the 90s decade, Blackfoot released the Medicine Man album. The final album with Rickey Medlocke was released in 1994, entiteled After The Reign. In 1997, Rickey Medlocke rejoined Lynyrd Skynyrd and put an end to the band Blackfoot. In the 2000s, Blackfoot would reform without Rickey Medlocke, who was busy with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

# 10 – Road Fever

We open our list of top 10 Blackfoot songs with an absolute scorcher. The song “Road Fever” was released on the great Blackfoot album entitled Strikes. The album was released in 1979. The band members on the album featured Rickey Medlocke on lead vocals and guitar, Charlie Hargrett on guitar, Greg T. Walker on bass, and Jakson Spires on drums.

# 9 – Send Me an Angel

Continuing with our Top 10 Blackfoot songs list, we turn to the song “Send Me An Angel.” The band sounds dramatically different on this 1983 album, Siogo, than in the 1970s. The sound of the big 1980s indeed comes into play here. At the time, the band consisted of Rickey Medlocke on lead vocals and guitars, Charlie Hargrett on guitars, Ken Hensley on keyboards, Greg T. Walker on bass, and Jakson Spires on drums.

# 8 – Good Morning

Listen to those guitars scream at the start of this one. This is heavy-rocking Blackfoot, and we love it. The song “Good Morning” was the opening track on the band’s hard-rocking album Marauder, released in 1981. These guys should have been so much bigger than they were. This one cranks to 11.

# 7 – After The Reign

“After The Reign” was the title cut to the album After the ReignThe album was released in 1994. The great guitarist Zakk Wylde performs a killer guitar solo on this smoking track. Featured on this album in the Blackfoot lineup was Rickey Medlocke on vocals and guitar, Benny Rappa on drums and percussion, Mark Woerpel on guitar and synthesizer, and Tim Stunson on bass.

# 6 – Fox Chase

Once you get past the opening dialog, this track explodes into southern rock and roll Heaven. This is easily one of our favorite Blackfoot songs. The track “Fox Chase” was released on the album Tomcattin.’  The album was released in 1980.

# 5 – Left Turn on a Red Light

At the halfway point on our top 10 Blackfoot songs list, we again turn to the excellent 1975 album Strikes in presenting the song “Left Turn On A Red Light.” Rickey Medlocke and Jakson Spores wrote the song. It’s incredible how much this sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd.

# 4 – Fly Away

One more time we return to the early 1980s album Marauder. The song “Fly Away,” was one of the top tracks on an album filled with fantastic recordings. “Fly Away,”was released as a single from the album. The song “Fly Away,” hit number 42 on the Billboard Hot making it the last Blackfoot hit single.

# 3 – Railroad Man

This incredible cut, “Railroad Man,” was released as Blackfoot’s first single of their career. The song was placed on their debut album, No Reservations, and used as the album’s opening track. However, the song never entered the Billboard music charts.
