Our Top 10 Olivia Newton-John songs list looks back at the career of a big-selling artist who had many hit singles that shaped 1970s pop music. In the early 1970s, she crossed genres, much as artists like Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles did. However, she was always considered more of a soft rock artist than those artists. Nonetheless, she would attempt to change her image many times, trying to shed the innocent girl-next-door image that had evolved during her “Have You Never Been Mellow” days. That transformation would be fueled by her starring role opposite John Travolta in the 1978 film Grease. Her emergence at the end of the film into the leather tuscadero pants must have triggered something. In 1978, she released the album Totally Hot, which defined her new sensual image. That album was followed in 1981 by the very successful record “Physical.” The transformation was complete, and it was all very successful.
Looking back at Olivia Newton-John’s career, one will find one of the most commercially successful musical artists of all time. She is one of pop culture’s biggest-selling artists, with over 100 million records sold. There aren’t many that come this close. Since 1971, Olivia Newton-John has released twenty-eight albums and seventy-one singles. She has starred in multiple motion pictures, including two films with John Travolta, including the original Grease and the 1981 film Two Of A Kind. She also starred in the motion picture Xanadu with legendary actor and dancer Gene Kelly.

It was a year in which Donna Summer and The Bee Gees were still having great success with their disco sound, although bands like The Knack and The Cars were starting to win the battle of the radio as New Wave was converting many music fans.

At the halfway point on our top 10 Olivia Newton-John songs list is a tie between two songs featured on the soundtrack album for the motion picture Xanadu. Both of these great songs, titled “Magic” and “Suddenly,” were huge hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The song “Suddenly” was a duet between Olivia Newton-John and the legendary singer Cliff Richard, who was one of the biggest rock stars of all time in the UK and who had a huge hit in the USA entitled “Devil Woman.”
# 4 – Physical
Many people would say that this was the biggest song of Olivia Newton-John’s career. It’s tough to argue against that because this song was huge. Just compare the album cover of Physical to Have You Never Been Mellow, and you will be blown away by the image change. The video for the song was put into heavy rotation on MTV and VH1 when it was released in 198. However, it’s very cringy, and we just could not bear to watch it again. It’s not one of our favorite Olivia Newton-John songs, but its success forced us to place it this high on the list. We are a history site. The song hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1981.
# 3 – The Grease Soundtrack: “Summer Nights, You’re The One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
