This has been a tough couple of days for the rock and roll world as we just lost Jeff Beck, then the news that Lisa Marie Presley passed away, and now the very sad news that David Crosby has died at the age of 81. No information has been given yet on the cause of death. The legendary rock and roll musician has been active in the music scene releasing new music and posting his thoughts on social media continually. The loss of these legendary rock and roll stars and much-loved musicians and personalities is tough to bear for music fans who grew up listening to the sound of their voices, their songs, their solos, and their performances on stage and on record.
Music fans first heard the beautiful voice of David Crosby a founding member of The Byrds in the mid-1960s. David Crosby would remain a member of the Byrds for the groups’ first five albums as they scored plenty of hits with Crosby. In 1967, David Crosby would leave the Byrds and form Crosby, Stills and Nash. That group would define the music and personality of David Crosby even more than the Byrds. The band would record on and off for over fifty years in t configurations from Crosby, Stills & Nash to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. David Crosby would also record a handful of albums with Graham Nash as well as a long list of David Crosby solo albums. Tensions would develop between members of the band over the years with some of them never having been resolved and sadly will never be.
David Crosby’s most recent solo album entitled For Free was released in July of 2021. He was interviewed on the Howard Stern show last year in which he revealed many of the issues he had with former band members and the hopes that they could be resolved. At the age of 81 he could still sing so beautifully and had continued to write heartfelt songs that went straight to the heart.
