Tom Verlaine who was one of the founding members of the band Television has passed away. Fans of punk rock and the New York City Music scene will remember the important role that the band Television played in the changing rock scene of the mid to late 1970s. While there were certainly many bands that were easily classified as punk rock in the 1970s, Television stood out as an outlier among them. The group never exhibited the sloppy performances of many of the New York City rock bands. Instead, they were a group that was clearly influenced by all music genres from jazz to folk to somewhere never ventured. Tom Verlian was one of the freshest voices to come along in the late 1970s and was too often linked to just the punk scene.
Television released their first album in 1977 entitled Marquee Moon. The album was hailed as brilliant by music fans and critics. The album featured original members Tom Verlaine, Billy Ficca, Freed Smith and Richard Lloyd. The band followed up their debut album with their sophomore release a year later called Adventure. Their second album released in 1978 featured the same lineup of musicians as their first. However, the band would split up after the release of their second album. Tim Veralain and Richard Lloyd’ pursued solo careers while drummer Billy Ficca formed the band The Waitresses.
In 1992, the band Television reunited and released their third studio album entitled simply Television. The band would perform on and off from that point on. Its sad to hear of the passing of Tom Verlaine whose musical composition and performances inspired a generation of musicians and songwriters.
