Beatles Song Now And Then

Just Saying “New Beatles Song Released Today” is simply breathtaking. Just think about it. Being able to say those words on November 2, 2023, is probably more monumental and thrilling than anthing else we could say in today’s world of popular music. Many people will ask how can we and millions of others state that this is a new Beatles song when John Lennon has been gone for forty three years and George Harrison for twenty two. It’s a similar question that was asked in the 1990s when the Anthology series was released with another new Beatles song called “Free As A Bird,” which was similar to the way that this song was put together but with a much lower degree of technology. The real big difference between “Free As A Bird,” and “Now And Then” is that George Harrison was still alive and participated with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney in bringing a John Leenon tape to life as a new Beatles song.
There is much hype about how AI helped in being able to produce the song. We use the word “produce” purposely instead of “created” because what we learned about AI’s help in the production of the song was entirely based on technology rather than creativity. AI basically became an all-star recording engineer. The real magic behind the song is of course with the musicians and producers that helped create it.
Whatever one may think of the song itself, is not really the story here. The story is in the beautiful moment that we are all living in today that allows us to ask a friend have you heard the new Beatles song? At this moment in time when the world is at war and there is so much bitter division among people, it feels like John Lennon is reaching out for the final time asking us to Imagine a world that could live as one. His voice being heard again alongside the guitar of George Harrison and the work of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr all together on record is such a captivating moment for all of us today. John Lennon was a warrior for peace. It was easy to see how John and Yoko shared that bond of fighting for peace. Hearing his voice again is a reminder of what he stood for beyond the legendary catalog of music he gave to the world.
The world was not at peace when the Beatles released their final album. The Vietnam War raged on in 1970. Division in the United States among the people continued on in the wake of the Civil Rights movement and acts of violence and tragedy like what happened at Kent State University and so many other places. Watergate was just on the horizon. Music could never heal the losses of war nor stop it. Yet it could take us away from it for a moment.
Once again The Beatles have given us a wonderful breather from it all. It’s not about the song, it’s about the moment that the song gives us. It’s a reminder of what John Lennon fought for, it’s about what Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, and the efforts of Peter Jackson have accomplished in bringing back the spirit of the Beatles. That is what makes this day so special and important in trying to remind people of what life should really be all about ….. and it certainly is not about war, division or hate… its about love….Imagine that.
