The band, also known simply as The Rascals, was formed in 1965 in the New York and northern New Jersey music scene. The group recorded seven studio albums for Atlantic Records before lineup changes and a move to Columbia Records produced two more studio albums. The Young Rascals (1966)

Collections (1966)

Collections is the second studio album by The Rascals. The album continued to build on the band’s blend of rock, soul, and R&B while giving the group’s own songwriting a larger role. It includes “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Come On Up,” and “Love Is a Beautiful Thing.” The album also features the Rascals’ energetic treatment of R&B favorites including “Mickey’s Monkey,” “Too Many Fish in the Sea,” and “Land of 1000 Dances.”

Groovin’ (1967)

Once Upon a Dream (1968)

Once Upon a Dream marked a significant evolution in The Rascals’ sound, incorporating orchestration, sound effects, Indian instrumentation, and more complex arrangements. It was the group’s first album credited simply to The Rascals rather than The Young Rascals. Produced by the band with Arif Mardin, the album includes “It’s Wonderful” and was conceived as a unified album experience rather than simply a collection built around singles. “A Beautiful Morning,” although closely associated with this period, was released as a non-album single after the album.

Freedom Suite (1969)

Freedom Suite is an ambitious double album by The Rascals that combined the band’s soulful rock songwriting with increasingly expansive instrumental experimentation. The first record contains songs including the number-one hit “People Got to Be Free,” “A Ray of Hope,” and “Heaven.” The second record moves almost completely into instrumental territory, culminating in the extended performances “Boom” and “Cute.”

Search and Nearness is the seventh studio album by The Rascals and the group’s final album for Atlantic Records. It was recorded during a period of major personnel change and became the final Rascals studio album to feature contributions from Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish. Felix Cavaliere’s expanding interest in jazz, gospel, and sophisticated soul can be heard throughout songs such as “Right On,” “I Believe,” and “Glory Glory.”

Peaceful World (1971)

Peaceful World marked the beginning of The Rascals’ Columbia Records period and a significant move toward jazz-rock, funk, and fusion. Felix Cavaliere and Dino Danelli worked with an expanded group of musicians that included guitarist Buzzy Feiten and numerous jazz and R&B session players. The Island of Real (1972)

The Island of Real is the ninth and final studio album by The Rascals. The record continued the jazz, funk, soul, and rock direction of the band’s Columbia period, with Felix Cavaliere and Dino Danelli joined by musicians including Buzzy Feiten and Robert Popwell. Songs such as “Lucky Day,” “Saga of New York,” “Brother Tree,” and the title track capture the adventurous sound of the band’s final chapter before The Rascals disbanded after touring behind the album.

The original four-member lineup reunited decades later for the multimedia concert production The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, which played Broadway and toured during 2013. In 2024, the seven-disc archival box It’s Wonderful: The Complete Atlantic Studio Recordings collected all seven Atlantic studio albums, mono and stereo versions of the early records, non-album singles, alternate mixes, and previously unreleased recordings. Those later archival releases did not add another studio album to the nine-album Rascals catalog.
