Gorillaz is a British virtual band created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. Known for its unique concept of featuring animated band members, Gorillaz blends various musical styles including rock, electronic, hip-hop, pop, dub, and world music. The official animated lineup consists of 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs, while the real-world project is led by Albarn and Hewlett with a changing cast of producers, studio musicians, guest artists, and live performers. Since its inception, the band has released nine studio albums through The Mountain in 2026, achieving significant chart success and winning a Grammy Award for “Feel Good Inc.” with De La Soul. Over the years, Gorillaz has continued to evolve through its combination of animation, music, multimedia storytelling, and live performance.

2-D

2-D, whose full fictional name is Stuart Pot, is the lead vocalist and keyboardist of Gorillaz. He has been one of the four core animated members since the band’s creation. Damon Albarn provides 2-D’s singing voice and serves as the primary real-world musical force behind the character. 2-D appears throughout the Gorillaz catalog, from the 2001 debut album through The Mountain in 2026.

Murdoc Niccals

Murdoc Niccals is the fictional bassist of Gorillaz and one of the four original animated members. He is presented in the band’s mythology as a driving force behind the group’s formation and has remained central to Jamie Hewlett’s visual storytelling throughout the project’s history. Murdoc continues to appear as one of the four official animated band members in the artwork for The Mountain.

Noodle

Noodle is the fictional guitarist of Gorillaz and one of the band’s four core animated members. The character has been an essential part of the group’s visual and musical identity since the debut era. Various singers and voice performers have helped bring Noodle to life over the years, while Jamie Hewlett has continued to develop the character visually. Noodle remains part of the official animated lineup on The Mountain.

Russel Hobbs

Russel Hobbs is the fictional drummer and percussionist of Gorillaz and one of the four original animated members. Russel has long represented the hip-hop and rhythmic side of the Gorillaz concept. Producer and percussionist Remi Kabaka Jr. has provided Russel’s speaking voice since the early Gorillaz era and later became an important real-world musical contributor to the project.

Damon Albarn

Damon Albarn is the co-founder of Gorillaz and has been the project’s consistent musical leader since its creation in 1998. As the principal songwriter, vocalist, instrumentalist, and producer, he is pivotal in shaping the band’s musical direction. Albarn has contributed to every Gorillaz studio album, including Gorillaz (2001), Demon Days (2005), Plastic Beach (2010), The Fall (2010), Humanz (2017), The Now Now (2018), Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez (2020), Cracker Island (2023), and The Mountain (2026). Outside Gorillaz, Albarn is renowned for his work with Blur and his involvement in other musical projects such as The Good, the Bad & the Queen.

Jamie Hewlett

Jamie Hewlett, although not a musician in the traditional sense, is a vital part of Gorillaz as its co-creator and the visual mastermind behind the band’s distinctive animated members, artwork, videos, and multimedia world. His contribution has been crucial in defining Gorillaz across all media platforms. Hewlett remains deeply involved in the project, including creating the artwork for The Mountain in 2026. Outside Gorillaz, he is celebrated as the co-creator of the comic series Tank Girl.

Remi Kabaka Jr.

Remi Kabaka Jr. began his Gorillaz association by providing the speaking voice of Russel Hobbs. He later became a major real-world musical contributor as a percussionist, drummer, songwriter, and producer. Kabaka was part of the production team behind Humanz, became especially prominent on Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez, and continued as a producer on The Mountain in 2026. His role has grown far beyond voice acting, making him one of the most important real-world collaborators in the modern Gorillaz era.

Junior Dan – Studio and Live Bassist

Junior Dan, born Sydney Gussine, is a Jamaican reggae bassist who played an important role in the early Gorillaz sound. He contributed bass to much of the band’s self-titled debut album and also played with the Gorillaz live band during the early touring era. His reggae background brought a distinct dub influence to the group’s first phase. Junior Dan later returned to contribute bass to “Sorcererz” from The Now Now in 2018. Beyond Gorillaz, he has worked with numerous reggae artists including Augustus Pablo and Lee “Scratch” Perry.
