Straylight Run is an American indie rock band formed in 2003 in Baldwin, New York. John Nolan (vocals, guitar, piano) and Shaun Cooper (bass) started the band after leaving Taking Back Sunday. They were soon joined by John’s sister, Michelle DaRosa (vocals, piano), and Will Noon (drums). The band is known for their melodic, introspective style that blends indie rock and emo influences.

Straylight Run released two full-length studio albums: Straylight Run (2004) and The Needles the Space (2007). They also released several EPs, including Prepare to Be Wrong (2005), 3 Track EP (2007), TNTS Digital (2007), Un Mas Dos (2008), and About Time (2009). Their debut album peaked at number one hundred on the Billboard 200, while their second album reached number seventy-two on the same chart. After announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2010, Straylight Run later reunited for performances in 2021 and 2025. Their only live album, Live at the Patchogue Theatre, was released in 2021, and the band returned with the song “Anthem” in 2025.

Straylight Run is the debut studio album by Straylight Run, released on October 12, 2004. The album blends indie rock and emo influences, showcasing the band’s melodic songwriting and emotional lyrics. The album peaked at number one hundred on the Billboard 200 chart.

John Nolan sings and plays guitar and piano; Michelle DaRosa sings and plays piano; Shaun Cooper plays bass; and Will Noon plays drums. Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner produced it, and it was recorded at Apple Head Studios in Woodstock, New York, between March and June 2004.

The Needles the Space (2007)

The Needles the Space is Straylight Run’s second studio album, released on June 19, 2007. The album features a broader range of musical styles and more experimental songwriting compared to their debut. It peaked at number seventy-two on the Billboard 200 chart.

The album features John Nolan on vocals, guitar, and piano, Michelle DaRosa on vocals, guitar, and piano, Shaun Cooper on bass, and Will Noon on drums. It was produced by Straylight Run and recorded at Red Wire Audio and Sapone Studios in August and September 2006, with Bryan Russell and Mike Sapone handling recording duties.

Prepare to Be Wrong is an EP by Straylight Run, released on October 4, 2005. The EP features new material, earlier songs revisited for the release, and the band’s cover of Bob Dylan’s “With God on Our Side,” providing a glimpse into the band’s evolving sound.

STRAYLIGHT RUN LATER RELEASES

Anthem (2025)

“Anthem” marked Straylight Run’s return with a new recording in 2025. The song was released in September 2025 and later appeared on Music for Everyone Vol. 2, a benefit compilation curated by John Nolan and released digitally on October 24, 2025.
