Formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1995, Semisonic features Dan Wilson on vocals and guitar, John Munson on bass, and Jacob Slichter on drums. The trio built its sound around melodic alternative rock, strong hooks, and lyrics that could move between wit, melancholy, and optimism. Semisonic’s 1996 debut Great Divide established the band, but 1998’s Feeling Strangely Fine brought the breakthrough with “Closing Time,” “Secret Smile,” and “Singing in My Sleep.” “Closing Time” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song and became the band’s signature recording.

Semisonic’s catalog now stretches from the 1995 Pleasure EP through four studio albums, a live album, a compilation, later reissues, and the band’s 2020 return with You’re Not Alone. The trio followed that comeback with Little Bit of Sun in 2023, its first full studio album in more than two decades. SEMISONIC STUDIO ALBUMS

Great Divide (1996)

Great Divide was Semisonic’s first full-length studio album and was released by MCA Records in 1996. The album was recorded in two major stretches, first during the band’s Elektra period and later after Semisonic moved to MCA. Paul Fox produced the record, helping shape the band’s mix of power pop, alternative rock, and melodic songwriting. Songs such as “F.N.T.,” “If I Run,” “Delicious,” and “Across the Great Divide” established the sound Dan Wilson, John Munson, and Jacob Slichter would keep developing. The album did not become a major commercial hit, but it gave Semisonic a strong foundation and a catalog of songs that remained important in the band’s live sets. Feeling Strangely Fine (1998)

Feeling Strangely Fine was released in 1998 and became Semisonic’s commercial breakthrough. Nick Launay produced the album, which was recorded in Minneapolis and gave the trio a warmer, more focused version of the melodic sound heard on Great Divide. “Closing Time” became the band’s biggest hit, while “Secret Smile” and “Singing in My Sleep” gave the album even more reach. Dan Wilson’s songwriting moves easily between romantic uncertainty, humor, and reflection, with John Munson and Jacob Slichter giving the songs a strong rhythmic center. The album reached number 43 on the Billboard 200 and became Semisonic’s defining studio release. More than two decades later, it remains the record most closely associated with the band’s rise.

All About Chemistry (2001)

All About Chemistry arrived in 2001 as Semisonic’s third studio album. Unlike Feeling Strangely Fine, the record was produced by Semisonic, with the band taking a larger role in shaping its own sound. “Chemistry,” “She’s Got My Number,” and “I Wish” pushed the trio toward a more layered mix of pop, psychedelia, and folk-influenced textures. Carole King co-wrote “One True Love” with Dan Wilson and also appears on the recording. The album did not match the commercial impact of its predecessor, but it showed a band willing to stretch beyond the formula that had produced its biggest hit. It became Semisonic’s final full-length studio album for more than twenty years.

Little Bit of Sun (2023)

Little Bit of Sun was released on November 3, 2023, and marked Semisonic’s first full studio album since All About Chemistry. The record brought Dan Wilson, John Munson, and Jacob Slichter back together with the same melodic chemistry that defined the band’s earlier work. “Little Bit of Sun,” “The Rope,” and “Grow Your Own” helped introduce the album before its release. Jason Isbell contributes lead guitar to “Out of the Dirt,” while Jim James appears on “Beautiful Sky.” The album moves between power pop, acoustic textures, and reflective songwriting without trying to recreate the late 1990s. It sounds like Semisonic returning with gratitude for the past but plenty of interest in where the band could go next.

One Night at First Avenue (2003)

One Night at First Avenue is Semisonic’s live album, released in 2003 from a hometown performance recorded at First Avenue in Minneapolis in June 2002. The set reaches across the band’s first three studio albums and also includes material that had appeared outside those records. Songs such as “F.N.T.,” “Closing Time,” “Secret Smile,” and “Chemistry” show how Semisonic’s tightly constructed studio writing opened up on stage. The live version of “Because” adds another song not found on the band’s main studio albums. The album captures the trio near the end of its first major recording period, before the long gap that followed All About Chemistry. It remains the band’s primary full-length live document.

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Semisonic (2003)

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Semisonic was released in 2003 as a compact overview of the band’s first major recording period. The collection pulls songs from Great Divide, Feeling Strangely Fine, and All About Chemistry. Predictably, “Closing Time” opens the set, but the disc also makes room for songs such as “The Prize,” “If I Run,” “Secret Smile,” and “Chemistry.” The closing track, “Over My Head,” comes from the Summer Catch soundtrack rather than one of the three studio albums. That soundtrack cut gives the compilation one song that was not part of Semisonic’s standard studio-album sequence. SEMISONIC REISSUES

Feeling Strangely Fine: 20th Anniversary Reissue (2018)

The 20th anniversary edition of Feeling Strangely Fine arrived in 2018 and expanded Semisonic’s best-known album beyond its original twelve tracks. The complete original album appears first in its familiar running order. Four 1998 B-sides follow the album, giving “Long Way from Home,” “I’m a Liar,” “Beautiful Regret,” and “Makin’ a Plan” a home on the expanded release. Those extra songs show more of the writing Semisonic was producing during its breakthrough period. The reissue works both as a celebration of the album and as a useful collection of material that had been scattered across earlier singles.

SEMISONIC EXTENDED PLAYS

Pleasure EP (1995)

Pleasure EP was Semisonic’s first commercial release and originally appeared in 1995. The title reaches back to Pleasure, the name the group used before becoming Semisonic. The EP contains early versions of “The Prize” and “Brand New Baby,” songs the band later revisited on Great Divide. “In the Veins,” “Wishing Well,” “Star,” “Sculpture Garden,” and “The Gift” help document the trio before its MCA debut album. A series of brief interludes closes out the fourteen-track release. It remains an important snapshot of Semisonic at the very beginning of its recording career.

Singing in My Sleep EP (1998)

Singing in My Sleep EP was released in 1998 during the Feeling Strangely Fine era. The five-track release begins with a radio mix of “Singing in My Sleep.” It also includes a basement acoustic demo of “Closing Time” and another appearance by “Delicious.” Semisonic’s version of Prince’s “Erotic City” gives the EP one of its most distinctive moments. The closing cover of “The Air That I Breathe” shows another side of the band’s melodic instincts. Together, the two covers and alternate versions make the EP more than a simple single companion. It is a small release, but it adds several performances that do not appear on the standard studio albums.

You’re Not Alone (2020)

You’re Not Alone was released on September 18, 2020, and marked Semisonic’s first new music in nearly twenty years. The five-song EP brought Dan Wilson, John Munson, and Jacob Slichter back into the studio without trying to pretend no time had passed. The title track carries a message of connection and hope, while “Basement Tapes” and “Don’t Make Up Your Mind” lean into the band’s reflective side. “All It Would Take” keeps the melodies direct, and “Lightning” closes the EP with a concise burst of energy. The release proved that Semisonic could return after a long hiatus and still sound unmistakably like itself. It also opened the door for the full-length comeback that followed with Little Bit of Sun.

“Don’t Give Up Yet” (2026)

Semisonic released “Don’t Give Up Yet” on June 17, 2026. The band recorded the basic tracks in August 2025 and returned to finish the song in March 2026. Dan Wilson began writing it as encouragement for a friend who was going through a difficult period. The finished recording grew into a broader song about holding on to hope when things feel dark. It became Semisonic’s first new release after Little Bit of Sun and extended the band’s active recording period into 2026.
