Puscifer began as one of Maynard James Keenan’s strangest creative detours. The name first surfaced through a fictional band on the television series Mr. Show, but the joke eventually grew into a serious musical and performance-art project. Free from the expectations surrounding Tool and A Perfect Circle, Keenan used Puscifer as a place where electronic music, rock, satire, theater, film, and a rotating cast of collaborators could exist under the same banner.
The project’s first full-length album, “V” Is for Vagina, arrived in 2007. Its combination of electronic textures, heavy rhythms, atmospheric vocals, and dark humor established a sound that was difficult to place inside any single genre. Companion releases and remixes soon followed, reinforcing the idea that Puscifer songs were not fixed objects but material that could be repeatedly rearranged, reinterpreted, and transformed.
Conditions of My Parole followed in 2011 and gave the project a more cohesive identity. Recorded in Arizona, the album balanced electronics with acoustic and organic instrumentation while placing greater emphasis on the vocal interplay between Keenan and Carina Round. Songs such as “Man Overboard,” “The Humbling River,” “Telling Ghosts,” and the title track became enduring parts of the Puscifer catalog.
The theatrical side of Puscifer developed alongside the music. Concerts incorporated recurring characters, comedy, elaborate staging, projected films, and carefully constructed narratives that blurred the line between a rock show and performance art. Releases such as What Is…, V Is for Versatile, Parole Violator, and Global Probing extended that approach beyond the stage.
Puscifer returned in 2015 with Money Shot. The album included “Grand Canyon,” “The Remedy,” “The Arsonist,” and “Simultaneous,” while Carina Round and Mat Mitchell became increasingly central to the project’s sound. A companion remix collection, Money $hot Your Re-Load, continued Puscifer’s long-running practice of rebuilding familiar songs from entirely different angles.
The 2020 album Existential Reckoning moved the group toward a futuristic, synthesizer-driven sound. “Apocalyptical,” “The Underwhelming,” “Bullet Train to Iowa,” “A Singularity,” and “Bedlamite” formed part of a record shaped by social unease, technological overload, and disconnection. The album was followed by the concert film and soundtrack Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti and the 2023 remix album Existential Reckoning: Rewired.
Puscifer remained active between studio albums with “No Angel” on the 2024 Sessanta E.P.P.P., “The Algorithm” for the American Psycho comic-series soundtrack, and the 2025 Primus collaboration “Little Lord Fentanyl.”
On February 6, 2026, Puscifer released its fifth studio album, Normal Isn’t. The record brought stronger post-punk and guitar-driven elements into the group’s sound while retaining the electronic detail and theatrical tension that had defined earlier releases. “Self Evident,” “A Public Stoning,” “Bad Wolf,” “Pendulum,” and the title track opened another chapter in the collaboration between Keenan, Round, and Mitchell.
Beyond its recordings, Puscifer has developed an unusually detailed creative world involving visual art, film, merchandise, live productions, and projects connected to Keenan’s Arizona-based winemaking ventures. That wider identity has helped Puscifer remain less like a conventional side project and more like an evolving artistic platform.
