Slowdive was formed in 1989 in Reading, Berkshire, by Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), and Simon Scott (drums, electronics). The band initially emerged amid the shoegaze movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s, a scene characterized by its ethereal soundscapes, heavy use of guitar effects, and indistinct vocals. Slowdive released their debut album Just for a Day in 1991, followed by Souvlaki in 1993 and Pygmalion in 1995. After an extended hiatus, they reformed in 2014 and subsequently released two more studio albums, Slowdive in 2017 and everything is alive in 2023, bringing their total to five studio albums.

The band’s early work, especially their second album Souvlaki, which peaked at number fifty-one on the UK Albums Chart, is frequently cited as one of the seminal albums of the shoegaze genre. Despite a lukewarm initial reception and being dropped by Creation Records after Pygmalion, Slowdive’s music gradually received greater critical acclaim and achieved cult status. Their 2017 self-titled comeback album reached number sixteen in the UK and number fifty on the US Billboard 200, their first entry on the American album chart. Souvlaki (1993)

Souvlaki is the second studio album by Slowdive, released by Creation Records in 1993. The album was recorded during 1992 at several studios, including Protocol Studios in London and Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire. Slowdive produced the album, with Ed Buller handling much of the mixing. Brian Eno also collaborated with the band during the sessions, contributing to “Sing” and “Here She Comes.” This album is often cited as one of the defining works of the shoegaze genre, incorporating more electronic influences and ambient sounds compared to their debut. The recording sessions were notably influenced by the band’s internal tensions and external pressures but resulted in an album that later received extensive critical acclaim. Pygmalion (1995)

Pygmalion is Slowdive’s third studio album, a drastic departure from their earlier work that embraced a more minimalist, ambient, and experimental sound. Produced and engineered by Slowdive and Chris Hufford, the album was recorded at Courtyard Studios. It initially received mixed reviews because of its radical shift in style but has grown considerably in esteem over the years. The album reached number seven on the UK Independent Albums Chart and number 108 on the broader UK album chart. Creation Records dropped Slowdive shortly after the album’s release, and the band entered a long hiatus before reuniting in 2014.

Slowdive (2017)

After a 22-year gap between studio albums, Slowdive returned with their self-titled album, Slowdive. The record was produced by Neil Halstead, with much of the recording centered at Courtyard Studios in Oxfordshire and additional work carried out at other studios. Chris Coady mixed the album at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. The record marked a triumphant return, blending classic shoegaze elements with modern sensibilities. It was well received, peaking at number sixteen on the UK Albums Chart and number fifty on the Billboard 200, giving Slowdive their first appearance on the main U.S. album chart.

everything is alive is the fifth and most recent studio album by Slowdive. Released by Dead Oceans, the album further evolved the band’s sound with a more expansive approach to ambience, electronics, and melody. Neil Halstead produced the album, which was recorded over a multi-year period at The Courtyard Studio in Sutton Courtenay, The Farm 2 in Cornwall, and Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire. Shawn Everett mixed six of the eight tracks, while Halstead mixed “shanty” and “chained to a cloud.” The album received critical acclaim and became Slowdive’s highest-charting studio album in the United Kingdom, reaching number six on the UK Albums Chart. It also reached number sixty-three on the Billboard 200.
