Urge Overkill is an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1984 by Nash Kato (vocals, guitar) and Eddie “King” Roeser (vocals, bass, guitar). The band initially gained attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s with its unique blend of alternative rock, power pop, and a tongue-in-cheek glam rock aesthetic. Their early work was characterized by a raw noise-rock and garage-rock sound, as heard on the Steve Albini-recorded Jesus Urge Superstar (1989), before the Butch Vig-produced Americruiser (1990) began pushing the band toward the bigger rock sound that would define its next phase. Urge Overkill has released seven studio albums: Jesus Urge Superstar (1989), Americruiser (1990), The Supersonic Storybook (1991), Saturation (1993), Exit the Dragon (1995), Rock & Roll Submarine (2011), and Oui (2022). The band has also released EPs including Strange, I… (1986) and Stull (1992), along with compilations and singles.

The band’s most significant commercial breakthrough came with its 1993 major-label album Saturation, released by Geffen Records. The singles “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding” received heavy alternative-radio and MTV exposure, with “Sister Havana” reaching No. 6 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. Urge Overkill gained even wider recognition when its cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” originally released on the Stull EP, was featured prominently in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction in 1994. The darker follow-up, Exit the Dragon (1995), reached No. 129 on the Billboard 200 before the band’s original run came to an end.

Urge Overkill reformed in 2004, with founding members Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser again serving as the band’s core. They returned to the studio-album format with Rock & Roll Submarine in 2011 and followed it with Oui in 2022. In 2026, the band announced a 30th-anniversary reissue of Exit the Dragon, while Oui remains its most recent studio album.

Jesus Urge Superstar (1989)

Jesus Urge Superstar is the debut studio album by Urge Overkill, released by Touch and Go Records in 1989. Recorded by Steve Albini, the album reflects the band’s early raw sound, with punk, noise-rock, and garage-rock elements pushed through the humor and irony that would remain part of Urge Overkill’s identity. The album features Nash Kato on guitar and vocals, Eddie “King” Roeser on bass, guitar, and vocals, and Kriss Bataille on drums. Its abrasive production and off-center songwriting capture a version of the band that sounds markedly different from the polished alternative rock they would pursue only a few years later.

Americruiser (1990)

Americruiser is Urge Overkill’s second studio album, released by Touch and Go Records in 1990. Produced by Butch Vig during sessions associated with his Smart Studios work in Madison, Wisconsin, the record marked a noticeable shift toward a cleaner, more direct rock sound while retaining the band’s punk edge. Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser remained at the center of the band, with Jack “Jaguar” Watt on drums. With tighter arrangements, bigger hooks, and songs such as “Ticket to L.A.,” Americruiser helped establish the arena-rock-meets-punk direction that Urge Overkill would develop further on its next releases.

The Supersonic Storybook (1991)

The Supersonic Storybook is Urge Overkill’s third studio album, released by Touch and Go Records in 1991 and produced by Steve Albini. Recorded during an intense week of after-hours sessions in Chicago, the album brought drummer Blackie Onassis into the lineup alongside Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser and captured the band at the point where its punk and noise-rock background was colliding with a growing love of power pop and classic rock. Songs such as “The Kids Are Insane” helped establish the swaggering sound and image that would soon carry Urge Overkill beyond the underground.

Saturation (1993)

Saturation is Urge Overkill’s fourth studio album and the band’s major-label breakthrough, released by Geffen Records in 1993. Recorded at Lew Blum Midway Studios in Chicago and Studio 4 in Philadelphia and produced by the Butcher Bros., with Andy Kravitz also receiving production credit, the album delivered a polished mix of power pop, glam-rock swagger, and alternative rock. “Sister Havana” reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart, while “Positive Bleeding” also received substantial airplay. Saturation remains the record most closely associated with Urge Overkill’s early-1990s commercial peak.

Exit the Dragon (1995)

Exit the Dragon is Urge Overkill’s fifth studio album, released by Geffen Records in 1995. Recorded at Studio 4 in Philadelphia and produced by the Butcher Bros., with Ian Cross also credited as a producer and engineer, the album turned away from the brighter gloss of Saturation toward a darker and more introspective sound. Nash Kato, Eddie “King” Roeser, and Blackie Onassis remained the core lineup. The record reached No. 129 on the Billboard 200 and became the band’s final studio album for sixteen years. Its reputation has continued to grow, and a 30th-anniversary vinyl reissue was announced for 2026.

Rock & Roll Submarine (2011)

Rock & Roll Submarine marked Urge Overkill’s return to the studio-album format after sixteen years. Released independently on UO Records in 2011, the album reunited Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser at the center of the band’s sound and returned to a rawer, more stripped-down form of rock and roll. Produced by Urge Overkill, the record combines the band’s familiar swagger with the perspective of musicians returning to a project that had been dormant on record since Exit the Dragon. The twelve-song album was the first of two new studio records released after the band’s reunion.

Oui (2022)

Oui is Urge Overkill’s seventh studio album, released by Omnivore Recordings on February 11, 2022. The album was assembled from material accumulated over a number of years and completed during sessions at Rockhouse Productions in St. Joseph, Minnesota, with Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser credited as the band’s two singer-songwriters and Urge Overkill credited with the production. The record contains eleven originals and a cover of Wham!’s “Freedom!” and continues the band’s blend of heavy riffs, melodic hooks, humor, and rock-and-roll swagger. Oui remains Urge Overkill’s most recent studio album.
