The White Stripes, formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan, became one of the most influential and distinctive rock bands of the 2000s. With Jack White and Meg White at the core, the duo crafted a raw, stripped-down sound that blended garage rock, blues, punk, and alternative elements. Their minimalist style, coupled with their commitment to a DIY ethos, resonated with audiences worldwide. Their breakthrough album, White Blood Cells (2001), marked the beginning of their rise to prominence, while Elephant (2003) propelled them to mainstream success with songs such as “Seven Nation Army.” Their distinctive red, white, and black color scheme became as recognizable as their music.

Throughout their career, the White Stripes released six studio albums, with their music evolving from stripped-back garage rock to more experimental sounds on albums such as Get Behind Me Satan (2005) and Icky Thump (2007). The band won multiple Grammy Awards and built a reputation for electrifying live performances while remaining a two-person group throughout its career. The White Stripes announced their breakup in 2011. In 2025, Jack White and Meg White were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the White Stripes. Jack accepted the honor for the duo, while Meg did not attend the ceremony.

Jack White

Jack White was the lead vocalist, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and primary creative force behind The White Stripes. He formed the band with his then-wife, Meg White, in 1997, and his distinctive guitar playing quickly became the foundation of the band’s sound. White’s vocals, characterized by their passion and intensity, helped define the music, while his blend of blues, punk, garage rock, and traditional American influences gave the group its identity. On albums such as White Blood Cells and Elephant, his songwriting moved from emotionally charged ballads to gritty rock songs without losing the stripped-down character of the duo.

After The White Stripes, White continued his work with The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather while building a successful solo career. His debut solo album, Blunderbuss, arrived in 2012, and his seventh solo studio album, Frozen Charlotte, was released in 2026. White also founded Third Man Records, which became a major outlet for his recording, production, vinyl, and archival projects. His work across multiple bands and solo releases has kept him active long after The White Stripes ended. In 2025, White accepted The White Stripes’ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and paid tribute to Meg’s role in the duo.

Meg White

Meg White was the drummer and percussionist for The White Stripes, contributing the minimalist yet powerful rhythm that became one of the defining features of the band’s sound. Her drumming was often noted for its simplicity, but its directness gave Jack White’s guitar playing room to move while keeping the duo’s performances forceful and immediate. Tracks such as “Fell in Love with a Girl” from White Blood Cells showed how effectively she could create momentum with a deliberately spare approach. Her style became inseparable from the sound and visual identity of The White Stripes.

Meg White’s drumming played an essential role in shaping the band, and she remained one half of The White Stripes throughout the group’s entire career. After the breakup in 2011, she largely withdrew from the music industry and public life and did not pursue another public performing career. She did not attend The White Stripes’ 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Jack White said at the ceremony that he had spoken with Meg and that she was grateful to the people who had supported her through the years. Her contributions remain central to the legacy of a band that built its identity around the chemistry of two musicians rather than a larger lineup.
