Highly Suspect originated in the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts, where Johnny Stevens and twin brothers Rich and Ryan Meyer began performing in local bars in 2009. The three musicians attended Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School and initially played covers of artists including Sublime, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd at venues such as the British Beer Company and Sundancers. What began as a weekend bar band soon developed into a project with greater urgency and ambition. The group later moved to Brooklyn, New York, where it recorded The Worst Humans EP with producer Joel Hamilton.

Between 2009 and 2013, Highly Suspect released the independent EPs First Offense, The Gang Lion EP, The Worst Humans, and Black Ocean. The band also issued the self-titled Highly Suspect album in 2011, combining newly recorded material with songs connected to its earlier releases. Tracks including “Lydia,” “Bath Salts,” and “Guess What” helped build an audience before the arrival of the band’s major-label debut, Mister Asylum, in 2015.

Mister Asylum earned Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song for “Lydia.” Its combination of exposed emotion, distorted guitars, and bruising rhythm established the sound that first carried Highly Suspect to a national audience. The band followed with The Boy Who Died Wolf in 2016. “My Name Is Human” reached number one on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and received another Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song, while “Little One” became another major rock-radio success.

The band’s third major-label studio album, MCID, arrived in 2019 and moved beyond the boundaries of modern rock. Collaborations with Young Thug, Tee Grizzley, Gojira, and Conor Mason brought hip-hop, metal, and alternative-pop elements into the group’s music. “16” became Highly Suspect’s second number-one single on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, while the album title, an abbreviation for “My Crew Is Dope,” reflected the creative community surrounding the band.

Highly Suspect released The Midnight Demon Club in 2022, followed by As Above, So Below in 2024. Those albums balanced the aggression of “Natural Born Killer,” “Pink Lullabye,” and “Suicide Machine” with longer, more reflective recordings including “Melatonia” and “The Reset.” The band then opened another chapter with the standalone singles “Yellow Roses,” “Yellow Roses XL,” “Wasted,” and “Big Shop of Horrors.”

Highly Suspect’s music resists a single category, drawing from hard rock, alternative rock, grunge, blues, garage rock, hip-hop, and electronic production. The stylistic shifts have never erased the emotional thread running through the catalog. Songs such as “Lydia,” “Little One,” “16,” and “My Name Is Human” confront trauma, addiction, heartbreak, self-doubt, and survival with a directness that has remained central to the band’s connection with listeners.
