Skid Row emerged from Toms River, New Jersey, in 1986, fueled by the vision of bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo. The two musicians sought to form a band that combined the grit of hard rock with the melodic hooks of metal, and they recruited guitarist Scotti Hill, drummer Rob Affuso, and vocalist Sebastian Bach, who joined in 1987. The lineup solidified before the band signed with Atlantic Records, with Sabo’s childhood friend Jon Bon Jovi helping open the door to the major-label deal.

In 1989, Skid Row released its self-titled debut album, produced by Michael Wagener. The record became a breakout success through “18 and Life,” “Youth Gone Wild,” and the power ballad “I Remember You.” Skid Row reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and established the band as one of the leading hard rock acts of the period.

The band’s success continued with Slave to the Grind in 1991. Heavier and more aggressive than its predecessor, the album became the first heavy metal release to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Songs including “Monkey Business,” “The Threat,” “Quicksand Jesus,” “Wasted Time,” and the title track revealed a band determined to push beyond the expectations created by its debut.

Skid Row followed with the covers EP B-Side Ourselves and then released Subhuman Race in 1995. The latter album presented a darker and more modern sound through songs such as “My Enemy,” “Breakin’ Down,” “Into Another,” and “Beat Yourself Blind.” Internal tensions contributed to Sebastian Bach’s departure in 1996, bringing the original era of the band to an end.

After a period of instability and lineup changes, Skid Row returned with vocalist Johnny Solinger on Thickskin in 2003 and Revolutions Per Minute in 2006. The band later issued two chapters of the United World Rebellion project, expanding its catalog with songs including “Kings of Demolition,” “This Is Killing Me,” “We Are the Damned,” and “Damnation Army.”

Solinger left the band in 2015 and was briefly succeeded by Tony Harnell. ZP Theart became Skid Row’s lead vocalist the following year and remained with the group until 2022. Swedish singer Erik Grönwall then joined the lineup for The Gang’s All Here, an energetic return to the band’s classic hard rock attack produced by Nick Raskulinecz.

Grönwall departed in 2024, and Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale fronted Skid Row for a limited run of concerts. That same year, the band released Live in London, its first official live album and concert film. Skid Row later began a worldwide search for its next lead vocalist, opening another chapter in a history defined by both major triumphs and repeated reinvention.

Throughout its career, Skid Row has balanced hard rock anthems, heavy metal aggression, punk energy, and power ballads. Songs such as “18 and Life,” “I Remember You,” “Monkey Business,” “Slave to the Grind,” and “Youth Gone Wild” remain central to the band’s legacy, while later recordings demonstrate how Rachel Bolan, Dave Sabo, and Scotti Hill continued carrying the music forward through changing lineups and shifting musical eras.
