Tones and I, whose real name is Toni Watson, is an Australian singer, songwriter, and record producer from Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. She began her career as a busker in Byron Bay after leaving her retail job in 2017 and moving to the coastal town. Watson uploaded her debut single, “Johnny Run Away,” to Triple J Unearthed in February 2019. The song gained significant airplay on Triple J and was officially released on March 1, 2019. “Johnny Run Away” entered the ARIA Singles Chart, peaking at number twelve, and was later certified double platinum in Australia.
Tones and I followed up with her second single, “Dance Monkey,” released in May 2019. The song became a global hit, topping the charts in over thirty countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and many parts of Europe. “Dance Monkey” spent twenty-four weeks at number one on the ARIA Singles Chart, the longest-running number one in Australian chart history. The single also reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 15× platinum in Australia, 11× platinum in Canada, and multi-platinum in several other countries.
In August 2019, she released her third single, “Never Seen the Rain,” which reached number seven in Australia and was certified four times platinum. In July 2019, Tones and I became the first female artist to top the ARIA Singles Chart with a debut single since 2015. Her debut EP, The Kids Are Coming, was released in August 2019 and reached number three on the ARIA Albums Chart. The EP included the singles “Johnny Run Away,” “Dance Monkey,” “Never Seen the Rain,” and “The Kids Are Coming.”
Tones and I won four ARIA Music Awards in 2019, including Best Female Artist, Breakthrough Artist, Best Pop Release for “Dance Monkey,” and Best Independent Release for The Kids Are Coming. She also received nominations for Song of the Year and Album of the Year. “Dance Monkey” was the most Shazamed song of 2019 and became the first song by an Australian artist to reach two billion streams on Spotify.
In July 2021, Tones and I released her debut studio album, Welcome to the Madhouse. The album debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. The album featured singles such as “Fly Away,” “Cloudy Day,” and “Won’t Sleep.” “Fly Away” peaked at number eleven on the ARIA Singles Chart and achieved multi-platinum certification.
Tones and I has performed at major festivals and television shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She has completed national and international tours, performing in North America, Europe, and Australia.
Outside of music, Tones and I has been involved in philanthropic efforts, donating proceeds from “Dance Monkey” to various charities and supporting youth music programs. She has also used her platform to speak about mental health, bullying, and the challenges of overnight fame.
