Tyla Laura Seethal was born on January 30, 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa. She grew up in a family with Indian, Zulu, Mauritian, and Irish ancestry. The music surrounding her in Johannesburg helped shape her ambitions, and while attending Edenglen High School, she began posting singing videos and original material online.

Tyla’s professional career began taking shape after manager Garth von Glehn discovered her work on social media. She signed with Fax Records and released “Getting Late,” featuring Kooldrink, in 2019. The song and its music video established her as a developing South African pop voice whose music could bring amapiano rhythms into a concise mainstream format.

In 2021, “Getting Late” received a South African Music Awards nomination for Music Video of the Year. Tyla followed it with recordings including “Overdue,” featuring DJ Lag and Kooldrink, and “To Last.” These early releases introduced the smooth vocals, rhythmic precision, and blend of pop, R&B, and South African dance music that would become central to her work.

Her international breakthrough arrived with “Water” in 2023. A dance challenge helped the single spread across social media, but the recording’s reach extended well beyond a viral moment. “Water” reached number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first top-ten entry on that chart by a South African solo artist in decades and establishing Tyla as an international star.

Tyla released her self-titled debut studio album, Tyla, on March 22, 2024. The album included “Water,” “Truth or Dare,” “Art,” “Jump,” “Safer,” “Butterflies,” and collaborations with Tems, Becky G, Gunna, Skillibeng, Kelvin Momo, and Travis Scott. It debuted at number twenty-four on the US Billboard 200 and became the highest-charting album by an African female solo artist in the chart’s history at that time.

“Water” won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024. Tyla returned to the same category two years later and won again with “Push 2 Start,” making her a two-time Grammy winner. “Push 2 Start,” “Back to You,” and “Shake Ah” had first appeared on the 2024 expanded edition TYLA +.

During 2025, Tyla released the four-song WWP project, featuring “Bliss,” “Dynamite” with Wizkid, “Is It,” and “Mr. Media.” Her widening list of collaborations also included recordings with Lisa, Travis Scott, Vybz Kartel, MOLIY, Cardi B, Lojay, Teyana Taylor, Jill Scott, Damiano David, Nile Rodgers, and other artists.

Her catalog continued expanding in 2026. Tyla joined Future for “Game Time,” recorded for the official FIFA World Cup 2026 project, and appeared with Zara Larsson on “Hot & Sexy (Girls Trip).” She then released her second studio album, A*POP, on July 24, 2026.

The fourteen-song A*POP included “Chanel,” “Is It,” “Is It Love,” “That Girl,” “Kiss,” “Mr. Nonchalant,” and “She Did It Again,” along with collaborations featuring Liquideep, MaWhoo, Babalwa M, and Zara Larsson. The album strengthened Tyla’s argument that an African pop artist does not need to separate international ambition from a recognizably South African musical identity.

Outside the recording studio, Tyla’s performances, videos, and fashion appearances have made her one of the most visible South African artists of her generation. Her work has brought amapiano textures to audiences across pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and dance music while keeping Johannesburg and South African culture at the center of her public identity.
