Living Death originated in Velbert, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and was formed in 1981 by brothers Reiner and Dieter Kelch. The early lineup also included vocalist Thorsten “Toto” Bergmann, guitarist Frank Fricke, and drummer Frank Schubring. The band developed its sound in the German heavy metal underground before becoming associated with the emerging speed metal and thrash metal movement.

Their debut album, Vengeance of Hell, was released in 1984. Its raw production and high-energy attack introduced songs including “You and Me,” “Heavy Metal Hurricane,” “Hellpike,” and “Riding a Virgin.” Living Death followed the album with the Watch Out! EP in 1985, which combined its title track with remixed versions of three songs from the debut.

Later in 1985, Living Death released their second studio album, Metal Revolution. The record included “Killing Machine,” “Grippin’ a Heart,” “Rulers Must Come,” “Screaming from a Chamber,” and “Deep in Hell.” The album helped establish the band more firmly within the German and European metal scenes.

The four-song Back to the Weapons EP arrived in 1986. By that point, Atomic Steif had joined the band on drums. Living Death continued its progression on Protected from Reality in 1987, introducing more intricate arrangements without abandoning the speed and aggression that defined its earlier releases. The album included “Horrible Infanticide (Part One),” “Manila Terror,” “Wood of Necrophiliac,” “Intruder,” and “War of Independence.”

Living Death released the Eisbein (mit Sauerkraut) single in 1987 and a four-song live recording in 1988. The band’s fourth studio album, Worlds Neuroses, followed in 1989. Songs including “Last Birthday,” “Die Young,” “Down,” “Sacred Chao,” and the title track reflected a broader and more experimental approach to the group’s speed and thrash metal foundation.

After Worlds Neuroses, vocalist Thorsten “Toto” Bergmann, guitarist Frank Fricke, and drummer Atomic Steif departed. Bergmann, Fricke, and Steif became involved with Sacred Chao, while Reiner and Dieter Kelch continued Living Death with vocalist Gerald Thelen and drummer Frank Ullrich.

The revised lineup released Killing in Action in 1991. The album included “Hang ’Em High,” “Hearteater,” “Polymorphic,” “Stand Up,” “Daily Life,” and the title track. It became Living Death’s fifth studio album and the final full-length release from the band’s original recording era.

Living Death’s catalog consists of five studio albums, several EPs, a single, demos, live recordings, and later reissues. The group’s original run ended in the early 1990s, followed by a reunion period from 2008 to 2010. Living Death was reactivated again in 2026 for concert appearances, bringing the band’s German speed and thrash metal history back to the stage.
