Knocked Loose has become one of the most powerful and influential forces in modern hardcore music, delivering an uncompromising blend of aggression, precision, and emotional honesty that has connected deeply with fans around the world. Formed in Oldham County, Kentucky in 2013, the band was founded by vocalist Bryan Garris, guitarist Isaac Hale, guitarist Cole Crutchfield, bassist Kevin Otten, and drummer Kevin Kaine. From the start, they brought a ferocity and sense of authenticity that stood out in a genre already known for its intensity. Their raw energy, coupled with a strong DIY work ethic, quickly earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from the American hardcore scene.
Their first major release came in 2014 with the EP Pop Culture, a record that caught the attention of both fans and critics for its brutal riffs, relentless pacing, and emotional depth. Songs like “The Gospel” and “Manipulator II” showcased a young band that already sounded experienced beyond their years. The EP was self-released but word of mouth spread quickly through social media and the hardcore touring circuit, earning Knocked Loose a loyal following.
Two years later, they released their debut full-length album Laugh Tracks in 2016 on Pure Noise Records. The album was recorded with producer Will Putney, known for his work with bands such as Every Time I Die and The Amity Affliction. Laugh Tracks brought Knocked Loose into the national spotlight, delivering an unrelenting assault of hardcore, metalcore, and breakdown-driven chaos that was impossible to ignore. Tracks like “Deadringer,” “Oblivions Peak,” and “Counting Worms” became anthems for a new generation of hardcore fans. The band’s sound combined the brutality of metallic hardcore with emotional lyricism that touched on themes of loss, isolation, and self-destruction.
Knocked Loose began touring relentlessly after the success of Laugh Tracks, performing alongside major acts including Every Time I Die, The Acacia Strain, and Terror. Their live performances were marked by intensity and precision, often turning small venues into unforgettable spectacles of energy and emotion. The band quickly grew from underground heroes to festival mainstays, performing on stages like Warped Tour, Bloodstock, and Download Festival.
In 2019, the band released their second full-length album A Different Shade of Blue, again produced by Will Putney. The record represented a massive leap forward for Knocked Loose, both musically and emotionally. It incorporated more complex songwriting and darker lyrical themes while maintaining the band’s signature ferocity. Songs like “Mistakes Like Fractures,” “Trapped in the Grasp of a Memory,” and “Guided by the Moon” demonstrated that the band had evolved without losing their edge. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim for its maturity and depth.
Following the success of A Different Shade of Blue, Knocked Loose continued touring worldwide, sharing stages with heavyweights such as Gojira, Slipknot, and Code Orange. They became known not only for their music but for their authenticity and commitment to their craft. In 2021, the band surprised fans with the release of the short EP A Tear in the Fabric of Life, an ambitious concept project that combined their music with a fully animated short film. The six-song release told a haunting story of loss and grief and was hailed as one of the most innovative releases in hardcore music in years. Critics and fans alike praised its cinematic scope, emotional storytelling, and unrelenting heaviness.
Knocked Loose continued their rise with appearances at major festivals and collaborations with artists across different genres. In 2024, they released their third full-length album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, which debuted to widespread acclaim. The record built upon everything the band had accomplished so far, showcasing their signature aggression while expanding their sonic boundaries. It included songs such as “Blinding Faith” and “Don’t Reach for Me,” which blended crushing breakdowns with introspective lyrics about spirituality, mortality, and self-acceptance.
Outside of their studio work, Knocked Loose has become respected for their charitable efforts and their support of mental health awareness within the music community. Members of the band have spoken openly about the struggles of maintaining balance in a high-pressure industry and the importance of supporting one another. Their music often reflects this honesty, with lyrics that dive deep into personal pain and collective struggle.
