Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1933. A gifted pianist from childhood, she studied classical music with ambitions of becoming a concert pianist and later attended the Juilliard School in New York. When she began performing in Atlantic City clubs, she adopted the name Nina Simone and added singing to her piano work, creating a path into a recording career she had not originally planned.
Her first album, Little Girl Blue, was recorded in 1957 and released in 1959. Its version of “I Loves You, Porgy” became her first major hit, while “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Love Me or Leave Me,” and the title track displayed the balance of classical technique, jazz phrasing, blues feeling, and dramatic interpretation that would remain central to her music.
During the early 1960s, Simone recorded prolifically for Colpix before moving to Philips. Albums including Nina Simone in Concert, Broadway-Blues-Ballads, I Put a Spell on You, Pastel Blues, and Wild Is the Wind produced defining performances such as “Mississippi Goddam,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “Feeling Good,” “Sinnerman,” “Four Women,” and “Wild Is the Wind.”
Simone’s work became inseparable from the civil rights movement. “Mississippi Goddam,” “Four Women,” “Backlash Blues,” “Why? (The King of Love Is Dead),” and “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” confronted racism, violence, grief, dignity, and political resistance directly. Her concerts joined musical virtuosity with speeches, humor, confrontation, and a demand that audiences engage with the realities behind the songs.
Her RCA years extended the range of her repertoire through albums including Nina Simone Sings the Blues, Silk & Soul, ’Nuff Said!, Nina Simone and Piano, To Love Somebody, Black Gold, and Here Comes the Sun. She reshaped material by Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Leonard Cohen, George Harrison, the Bee Gees, Jacques Brel, and many others until each performance carried her own rhythmic, harmonic, and emotional identity.
Simone continued recording and performing after leaving the United States, living at different times in Liberia, Barbados, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France. Later releases such as Baltimore, Fodder on My Wings, Nina’s Back, and A Single Woman documented a career that remained musically restless until her final studio album. She died in France on April 21, 2003, at the age of 70.
Recognition for Simone’s work continued to grow after her death. “I Loves You, Porgy” entered the Grammy Hall of Fame, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Her recordings have influenced generations of singers, pianists, songwriters, producers, filmmakers, and activists across jazz, soul, rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic music, and classical performance.
Archival releases have continued to reveal new dimensions of her live work. Nina Simone: The Montreux Years gathered performances spanning five festival appearances, while You’ve Got to Learn presented her previously unreleased July 2, 1966, Newport Jazz Festival set. The 2024 collection BLACKBIRD: The Colpix Recordings (1959–1963) expanded her early catalog with album material, singles, edits, and recordings from the Colpix vaults.
In 2026, Verve Records issued a series of electronic reinterpretations of Simone recordings, including mixes by Solomun, DESIREE, Supershy, Mochakk, HAAi, and dublon. These releases placed her voice and arrangements inside new dance-music settings while keeping the original performances available alongside the remixes.
