Surfaces formed in 2017 in College Station, Texas, after Colin Padalecki began uploading music online while attending Texas A&M University. Padalecki had started creating music with his cousin, Alexa Padalecki, while they were still in high school. After hearing Colin’s material online, Baylor University graduate Forrest Frank reached out and invited him to record at his houseboat. The collaboration led to the debut Surfaces album, Surf, in December 2017.

Surfaces released seven studio albums between 2017 and 2026: Surf, Where the Light Is, Horizons, Pacifico, Hidden Youth, Good Morning, and All the Space Between. The band’s music combines elements of pop, soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae, calypso, and laid-back acoustic music. “Sunday Best,” from Where the Light Is, became the group’s breakthrough hit, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 after gaining enormous popularity through streaming and TikTok. Surfaces later collaborated with Elton John on “Learn to Fly,” which was released in June 2020.

The group’s lineup changed after Forrest Frank left Surfaces in 2024 to concentrate on his increasingly successful solo Christian music career. Colin Padalecki continued Surfaces as the project’s principal member, releasing “Miss Sunshine” and “Livin Alright” in 2025. The singles “Call Me When You’re Home” and “Blame It All On Me” followed in 2026. Surfaces released the sixteen-song album All the Space Between on July 17, 2026, marking the first full-length Surfaces album without Frank.

Colin Padalecki

Colin Padalecki co-founded Surfaces in 2017 and remains the principal member of the project. Born on June 6, 1997, in South Texas, Padalecki began creating music in high school with his cousin, Alexa Padalecki. While attending Texas A&M University as a management information systems major, he uploaded music online and connected with Forrest Frank, who had discovered his work. Together with Alexa, they developed the material that became Surf.

Padalecki served as a producer, songwriter, performer, designer, and business manager throughout the band’s first six studio albums: Surf, Where the Light Is, Horizons, Pacifico, Hidden Youth, and Good Morning. His work appeared on signature Surfaces recordings including “Sunday Best,” “Grace,” “Palm Trees,” “Shine On Top,” “Wave of You,” and “Good Day.” He also helped develop the group’s album artwork, merchandise, and visual identity.

Padalecki graduated from Texas A&M University in 2020 with a degree in management information systems from Mays Business School. His business education influenced his approach to band operations, including merchandise, publishing, design, and contract management. In 2023, he worked with Texas A&M University on “Aggie Intro,” which was used as the football team’s walkout song.

Following Frank’s departure, Padalecki carried Surfaces into a new period with “Miss Sunshine,” “Livin Alright,” “Call Me When You’re Home,” and “Blame It All On Me.” He led the creation of All the Space Between, the seventh Surfaces album and the project’s first full-length release without Frank. Padalecki has also released music under the name Colin Vincent, including the country-influenced project Rodeo Underground.

Forrest Frank

Forrest Frank co-founded Surfaces in 2017 after discovering Colin Padalecki’s music online. Born on April 8, 1995, in the greater Houston area, Frank attended Baylor University and earned a business degree. He contacted Padalecki after hearing his work and invited him to record at a houseboat, where the partnership that defined Surfaces began.

Frank performed on every Surfaces album from Surf through Good Morning. As the group’s lead vocalist and co-producer, he became the voice most closely associated with “Sunday Best,” which reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also contributed to “Learn to Fly” with Elton John, “Wave of You,” “Sheesh!,” “I Can’t Help But Feel,” and many other Surfaces recordings.

Frank began releasing music outside Surfaces while he was still part of the group. His solo work gradually moved toward Christian pop, hip hop, and worship music. The album Child of God arrived in 2024 and reached number one on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. It was followed by Child of God II in 2025, which also debuted at number one on the Christian chart and reached number 12 on the Billboard 200.

His solo recordings include “Good Day,” “No Longer Bound,” “UP!,” and “Your Way’s Better.” The success of that material led Frank to leave Surfaces in 2024 and concentrate fully on his solo career. His departure ended the duo configuration that had defined the band from its debut through Good Morning.

Alexa Padalecki

Alexa Padalecki was part of the earliest version of Surfaces and helped establish the project before its first album was released. She is Colin Padalecki’s cousin, and the two began creating music together while they were in high school.

Alexa contributed vocals to Surf, including material from the period that produced “The Way,” “Be Alright,” “24 / 7 / 365,” “Falling,” “Alone,” “Loving,” “Stay,” “Islands,” “Ocean Breeze,” and “Kid Kingdoms.” Her voice was part of the lighter, harmony-driven sound heard on the debut.

She left Surfaces after Surf and did not participate in Where the Light Is or the albums that followed. Public information about her subsequent musical work remains limited, but her contributions belong to the founding period from which Surfaces developed.
