Surfaces formed in 2017 in College Station, Texas, when Colin Padalecki began uploading music online while attending Texas A&M University. After hearing Padalecki’s material, Baylor University graduate Forrest Frank reached out to invite him to record at his houseboat, leading to the release of their debut album, Surf, in December 2017. The band released six studio albums through 2024, with their most recent being Good Morning in June of that year. The albums collectively achieved significant commercial success, particularly with the track “Sunday Best” from their 2019 album Where the Light Is, which reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned over 1 billion Spotify streams by 2024.

The group’s music encompasses elements of surf, jazz, soul, pop rock, hip hop, reggae, and calypso. “Sunday Best” became a viral TikTok phenomenon in 2020 and charted across multiple territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. “Learn to Fly,” a collaboration with Elton John released in June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, charted at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their second and third albums, Where the Light Is and Horizons, were released in January 2019 and February 2020, respectively, through Caroline Records and TenThousand Projects. The band’s fourth and fifth albums, Pacifico and Hidden Youth, were released in June 2021 and August 2022, respectively.

In 2023, Texas A&M University commissioned Surfaces to write the football team’s walkout song, titled “Aggie Intro,” which debuted during the fall 2023 season. As of 2025, the band appears to be transitioning, with Forrest Frank reducing his involvement to focus on his successful solo Christian music career. Since June 2024, the band has released two singles, “Miss Sunshine” and “Livin’ Alright,” featuring only Colin Padalecki without Frank’s participation. The group has maintained merchandise and branding operations alongside their recording career, with Colin Padalecki managing design and business operations, drawing on skills developed through his management information systems degree from Texas A&M University.

Colin Padalecki

Colin Padalecki co-founded Surfaces in 2017 and remains with the band in 2025. Padalecki was born on June 6, 1997, in South Texas and began creating music in high school with his cousin, Alexa Padalecki. While attending Texas A&M University as a management information systems major, Padalecki uploaded his music online and eventually connected with Forrest Frank, who heard his material on SoundCloud. Together they recorded the album Surf, released in December 2017. Padalecki maintained his university enrollment while pursuing music, balancing studies with band activities and eventually deciding to leave his track-and-field program to focus on the music business.

Padalecki served as producer, songwriter, and business manager for Surfaces throughout all six studio albums: Surf (2017), Where the Light Is (2019), Horizons (2020), Pacifico (2021), Hidden Youth (2022), and Good Morning (2024). He performed on signature tracks including “Sunday Best,” “Grace,” “Palm Trees,” “Shine On Top,” and recent releases “Miss Sunshine” and “Livin’ Alright.” His contributions to albums extended beyond performance to include album cover design, which he created using Apple’s Keynote presentation software, drawing inspiration from locations including Seattle, Malibu, Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, and Joshua Tree. Padalecki handled merchandise design and operations for the band in its early years, managing up to 700 orders per week while a student.

Beyond Surfaces, Padalecki graduated from Texas A&M University in 2020 with a degree in management information systems from Mays Business School. His business education informed his approach to band operations, including contract negotiation and management of publishing rights. In 2023, he worked with Texas A&M University to compose “Aggie Intro,” the university football team’s official walkout song, which connects to his early performances at the Pepsi pre-game show at Kyle Field. Padalecki has pursued solo work under the name Colin Vincent, releasing the project Rodeo Underground, which blends country music with a beach-influenced sound similar to Surfaces. He continues to develop music with collaborators through writing camps and lakeside songwriting sessions in Texas.

Forrest Frank

Forrest Frank co-founded Surfaces in 2017 and joined the band after its initial formation. Born on April 8, 1995, in the greater Houston area, Frank grew up in a Christian household and attended Baylor University where he earned a business degree. Frank was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Baylor and is a self-taught musician who grew up surrounded by music and sang in the church choir. After discovering Colin Padalecki’s music on SoundCloud, Frank reached out to collaborate, and the two recorded their debut albumSurf, together in 2017, with Frank taking over lead-vocal duties for the project.

Frank performed on all Surfaces albums from Surf through Good Morning, appearing as lead vocalist and co-producer on Where the Light Is (2019), Horizons (2020), Pacifico (2021), Hidden Youth (2022), and Good Morning (2024). His vocal performance on “Sunday Best,” from Where the Light Is became the band’s breakthrough single, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and accumulating over 1 billion Spotify streams. Frank also contributed to other notable tracks, including “Learn to Fly” with Elton John, “Wave of You” from Pacifico, and “Good Day” from Good Morning. Frank was absent from two singles released since June 2024, “Miss Sunshine” and “Livin’ Alright,” as he redirected focus to his solo career.

Following Surfaces’ success, Frank began a solo music career in 2018, releasing a project under the alias “Forrest” with producer Biskwiq, including tracks “Your Soul” and “Why Not Me,” which accumulated over 60 million and 38 million Spotify streams, respectively. He married Grace Frank on March 31, 2020, with a smaller ceremony due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, and their son Bodie was born on March 8, 2023. Frank took a year off from touring in 2021, relocated to Waco, Texas, and began developing his solo Christian music career. He released the single “No Longer Bound,” featuring rapper Hulvey in 2023, which gained significant traction across social media platforms with over 60 million Spotify streams. Additional solo releases included “Lift My Hands,” “Slow Down,” and collaborations with various artists throughout 2023.

In July 2024, Frank released his first full-length Christian music album, Child of God, through River House Records, Warner Music Group, and 10K Projects. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, remained there for 35 non-consecutive weeks, and sold 22,000 copies in its first week. Child of God became the largest Christian album debut of 2024 and reached number 28 on the Billboard 200, number 1 on the worldwide iTunes chart across all genres, and was nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards. The album featured collaborations with Tori Kelly, JVKE, Cain, Hulvey, and Caleb Gordon. Singles from the album included “Good Day,” which won the 2024 GMA Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year and peaked at number 2 on the Hot Christian Songs chart, “No Longer Bound,” which reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart, “UP!,” featuring Connor Price that reached number 8 on Hot Christian Songs, and “Always,” “God Is Good,” and “Never Get Used To This.”

Frank released a deluxe edition of Child of God in November 2024, expanding the album to 27 tracks. He was named Billboard’s Top New Christian Artist in 2023 and received the GMA Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 2024. In May 2025, Frank released Child of God II, his follow-up album, which debuted at number 2 on the Top Christian Albums chart while Child of God held the number 1 position. Frank achieved his first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Your Way’s Better,” which reached number 61 following viral TikTok momentum in 2025 and topped the Hot Christian Songs chart. Throughout 2025, he released additional singles including “Your Way’s Better,” collaborations with Thomas Rhett on “Nothing Else,” and tracks “Drop!,” “Sunrise,” and “No L’s.” Frank has toured extensively with his sold-out Child of God tour and Child of God Part II tour, attracting family audiences in addition to his traditional fanbase.

Alexa Padalecki

Alexa Padalecki co-founded Surfaces in 2017 as a founding member and performer. Alexa is Colin Padalecki’s cousin and grew up as a church choir member with musical training. She began creating music with Colin in high school, and together they initially developed the material that would become the band’s foundation. Alexa contributed vocals to the debut album Surf, released in December 2017, which included tracks such as “The Way,” “Be Alright,” “24 / 7 / 365,” “Falling,” “Alone,” “Seattle Interlude,” “Loving,” “Stay,” “Islands,” “Ocean Breeze,” and “Kid Kingdoms.”

Alexa left Surfaces after the release of the debut album Surf and did not continue with the band for subsequent releases. She departed before the release of Where the Light Is in January 2019, with Forrest Frank taking over primary vocal duties for the band moving forward. After her departure from Surfaces, Alexa pursued her own musical path and remained close with Colin Padalecki despite taking different career directions. Details regarding her post-Surfaces career activities remain limited in available public sources.
