Tokio Hotel formed in Magdeburg, Germany, in 2001 around identical twin brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer. The four musicians first performed together under the name Devilish before adopting the Tokio Hotel name. Their lineup has remained unchanged throughout the band’s recording career.

The group’s breakthrough arrived in 2005 with “Durch den Monsun” and the debut album Schrei. Bill’s dramatic vocals, Tom’s guitar work, Georg’s bass lines, and Gustav’s forceful drumming gave the early recordings an emotional pop-rock sound that connected immediately with listeners across Germany and other European markets.

Zimmer 483 followed in 2007, while Scream introduced English-language versions of songs from the band’s first two German albums to an international audience. Tokio Hotel expanded its sound with the electronic and alternative elements of Humanoid, then moved further into synth-pop and atmospheric production on Kings of Suburbia, Dream Machine, and 2001.

The band has sold more than ten million records worldwide and collected dozens of platinum and gold awards. Its international honors include the 2008 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and multiple MTV Europe Music Awards. Tokio Hotel’s continued success has depended not only on its songs but also on the unusual stability of a lineup that has stayed together from adolescence into adulthood.

Tokio Hotel entered another active period in 2026 with the announcement of Encore, scheduled for release on October 16. The twelve-song album includes the singles “Memory Lane,” “Changes,” and “California Nights.” An arena tour beginning later that month was announced for major cities across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Bill Kaulitz

Bill Kaulitz was born on September 1, 1989, in Leipzig, East Germany. He co-founded the group with his twin brother Tom and became Tokio Hotel’s lead vocalist, lyricist, and visual focal point. His distinctive voice and expressive performance style defined the band’s earliest hits, including “Durch den Monsun,” “Schrei,” “Rette mich,” and “Der letzte Tag.”

Bill has sung on every Tokio Hotel recording, moving from the youthful pop-rock intensity of Schrei and Zimmer 483 to the darker electronic textures of Humanoid and the increasingly polished pop production of the later albums. He also recorded the English-language vocals for Scream, helping the band build a larger audience outside German-speaking Europe.

In 2008, a cyst on Bill’s vocal cords required surgery and forced the temporary cancellation of tour dates. He returned after rehabilitation and resumed recording and performing. The experience became an important turning point in the band’s development, reinforcing the need to protect the voice at the center of its sound.

Outside Tokio Hotel, Bill has worked in television, fashion, writing, and podcasting. He published the German-language autobiography Career Suicide: Meine ersten dreißig Jahre and co-hosts the podcast Kaulitz Hills – Senf aus Hollywood with Tom. The brothers also appear together in the Netflix series Kaulitz & Kaulitz.

Tom Kaulitz

Tom Kaulitz was born on September 1, 1989, in Leipzig, ten minutes before his twin brother Bill. He began playing guitar as a child and formed the musical partnership with Bill that became the foundation of Tokio Hotel. Tom serves as the band’s guitarist, producer, arranger, and one of its principal songwriters.

His early playing combined heavy rhythm guitar, melodic hooks, and occasional hip-hop influence. As Tokio Hotel’s recordings became more electronic, Tom’s role expanded beyond conventional rock guitar into programming, keyboards, studio production, and detailed arrangement. His work helped the group move from the direct sound of Schrei to the layered production of Humanoid, Kings of Suburbia, Dream Machine, and 2001.

Tom has appeared on every Tokio Hotel album and remains closely involved in the band’s studio direction. He and Bill relocated to Los Angeles in 2010, allowing them to work with a wider range of producers and songwriters while Georg and Gustav continued living in Germany.

Beyond the band, Tom co-hosts Kaulitz Hills – Senf aus Hollywood and appears in Kaulitz & Kaulitz. Those projects have given listeners a closer view of the twins’ creative relationship while Tokio Hotel has continued recording and touring with all four members.

Georg Listing

Georg Moritz Hagen Listing was born on March 31, 1987, in Halle, East Germany. He met Gustav Schäfer through music school, and the two later connected with Bill and Tom Kaulitz. Listing became Tokio Hotel’s bassist and the oldest member of the four-person lineup.

His bass playing supplied a steady melodic foundation beneath Tom’s guitar and Gustav’s drums on the early records. Songs such as “Durch den Monsun,” “Übers Ende der Welt,” “Spring nicht,” and “Automatic” depend on the balance between Listing’s low-end support and the band’s larger vocal and guitar arrangements.

As Tokio Hotel incorporated more electronic production, Listing expanded his role to include keyboards, synthesizers, and backing vocals. That versatility became particularly important on Kings of Suburbia, Dream Machine, and 2001, where programmed textures often interact with live bass rather than replacing it.

Listing has remained the most private member of the group, generally keeping his attention on music and touring. His measured stage presence and dry humor provide a contrast to the Kaulitz brothers’ more visible public roles, while his musicianship helps hold together both the rock and electronic sides of Tokio Hotel’s catalog.

Gustav Schäfer

Gustav Klaus Wolfgang Schäfer was born on September 8, 1988, in Magdeburg, East Germany. He began playing drums as a child and met Georg Listing while attending music school. Listing introduced him to Bill and Tom Kaulitz, completing the lineup that would become Tokio Hotel.

Schäfer’s drumming drove the band’s early pop-rock recordings with sharp fills, strong backbeats, and the energy needed for large concert performances. He played on every track from the debut era through Zimmer 483, Scream, and Humanoid, adapting his approach as the arrangements grew more complex.

Later Tokio Hotel records required Schäfer to combine acoustic drums with electronic rhythms, samples, and programmed percussion. His ability to move between those elements helped the band preserve a live physical pulse even as its studio sound became more synthetic and atmospheric.

Schäfer has remained based in Germany and has generally kept his private life outside the spotlight. Within the band, he is known for consistency and a grounded personality, qualities that have supported Tokio Hotel through international success, extended touring, changes in musical direction, and long gaps between albums.
