Kneecap emerged from Belfast in 2017 as an Irish-language hip-hop trio built around two rappers and a masked DJ. Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí combine Irish and English lyrics with satire, club music, political commentary, and stories drawn from working-class life in the North of Ireland.

The group first gained attention with “C.E.A.R.T.A.” and the 2018 mixtape 3CAG. Their use of Irish in a modern rap setting became central to Kneecap’s identity, placing the language inside contemporary youth culture rather than treating it solely as a historical or academic subject.

Kneecap released its debut studio album, Fine Art, in 2024. Produced by Toddla T, the record was structured around a night in an imaginary West Belfast pub called the Rutz. It mixed hard electronic production, punk energy, comedy, and social observation while featuring guests including Grian Chatten, Radie Peat, Jelani Blackman, and Nino.

The semi-fictionalized film Kneecap also arrived in 2024, with all three members playing versions of themselves alongside Michael Fassbender. The film won the Audience Award in the NEXT category at the Sundance Film Festival and later received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

The trio followed Fine Art with FENIAN in May 2026. Produced with Dan Carey, the album entered the UK Albums Chart at number two and reached number one in Ireland. Kneecap remained active on the international festival circuit throughout 2026 with its original three-member lineup intact.

Mo Chara

Mo Chara is the stage name of Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, one of Kneecap’s two MCs. Raised in West Belfast and educated through Irish, he delivers rapid bilingual verses that move between political satire, neighborhood stories, nightlife, humor, and confrontation. His stage name translates as “my friend.”

Mo Chara appeared throughout 3CAG, Fine Art, and FENIAN. His performances include the sharp exchanges and character-driven verses heard on “C.E.A.R.T.A.,” “Amach Anocht,” “Fine Art,” “I’m Flush,” “Better Way to Live,” “Sick in the Head,” and the group’s later material.

He made his acting debut with Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in the 2024 film Kneecap. The trio’s chemistry allowed the film to move between music biography, political comedy, and fictionalized adventure without separating the screen characters from their established stage personas.

In May 2025, Ó hAnnaidh was charged in London over an alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a November 2024 concert. He denied supporting Hezbollah. The charge was dismissed in September 2025 after the court ruled that the proceedings had not been instituted within the required legal time limit. The High Court rejected the prosecution’s appeal in March 2026, bringing the case to an end without a trial.

Móglaí Bap

Móglaí Bap is the stage name of Naoise Ó Cairealláin, Kneecap’s other MC. He grew up in an Irish-speaking household in West Belfast and developed a direct relationship with the language through family, school, community activism, and music. His father, Gearóid Ó Cairealláin, was a prominent figure in Belfast’s Irish-language movement.

Móglaí Bap’s writing often combines personal experience with broad political and cultural themes. His verses can shift quickly from comic storytelling and club scenes to language rights, colonial history, policing, identity, and the pressures facing young people in working-class communities.

He appeared on the 2018 mixtape 3CAG and both studio albums, Fine Art and FENIAN. Songs including “C.E.A.R.T.A.,” “Tá na Baggies ar an Talamh,” “I bhFiacha Linne,” “Drug Dealin Pagans,” “Parful,” and “Rhino Ket” demonstrate the conversational energy he shares with Mo Chara.

Móglaí Bap also played a fictionalized version of himself in the film Kneecap. Michael Fassbender portrayed his character’s father, giving the film a family storyline that echoed the group’s larger concerns with language, inheritance, resistance, and cultural survival.

DJ Próvaí

DJ Próvaí is the stage name of JJ Ó Dochartaigh, Kneecap’s DJ, producer, and third founding member. Originally from Derry, he worked as an Irish-language and music teacher before committing to the group full time. His background in education helped shape Kneecap’s belief that Irish could reach younger audiences through club culture and hip-hop.

DJ Próvaí performs in an Irish tricolour balaclava, an image that became one of the group’s defining visual signatures. Behind the decks, he connects rap production, rave music, bass-heavy electronics, samples, and live transitions while Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap trade verses at the front of the stage.

He helped create the sound of 3CAG and worked with Toddla T during the making of Fine Art. On FENIAN, Kneecap collaborated with producer Dan Carey on a darker and more aggressive sound that retained the trio’s humor and dance-floor energy.

DJ Próvaí made his acting debut alongside his bandmates in Kneecap. The film transformed elements of his teaching background and masked stage identity into a fictional origin story in which music, language, friendship, and political tension bring the group together.
