Switch came together in Mansfield, Ohio, in December 1976 after Gregory Williams began assembling a group built around instrumental versatility, vocal range, and strong songwriting. The original lineup included Williams, brothers Bobby and Tommy DeBarge, Phillip Ingram, Eddie Fluellen, and Jody Sims. Williams, Bobby DeBarge, and Sims had previously worked together in White Heat, a group connected to Barry White that released an album through RCA. The new band’s name reflected Williams’s idea that every member should be capable of switching instruments and moving between lead and background vocals.

After the group completed an eight-song demo, Williams and Sims traveled to Los Angeles and met Jermaine Jackson. Jackson brought Switch to Motown, where the band signed with the Gordy label and came under the management of Jermaine and Hazel Gordy Jackson. The self-titled debut album, Switch, arrived in 1978 and introduced the band’s polished mixture of romantic ballads, funk, soul, and ensemble musicianship. “There’ll Never Be” became the breakthrough single, reaching the Top 10 of the R&B chart and crossing into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Switch II followed in 1979 and strengthened the group’s standing through “Best Beat in Town” and “I Call Your Name.” Bobby DeBarge’s falsetto remained one of the band’s most identifiable sounds, while Phillip Ingram, Gregory Williams, and the other members gave the records a broader vocal character than that of a group built around a single lead singer. The arrangements also reflected the instrumental range that had inspired the Switch name.

The group released two albums in 1980. Reaching for Tomorrow included “Don’t Take My Love Away,” “Power to Dance,” and “My Friend in the Sky.” The later expanded edition added “Tahiti Hut,” featuring Jermaine Jackson. This Is My Dream followed with “Love Over and Over Again,” “You and I,” “Believe in Yourself,” and the title track. “Love Over and Over Again” became another Top 10 R&B hit for the band.

Switch V, released in 1981, became the group’s fifth and final album for Gordy. Its songs included “I Do Love You,” “Call on Me,” “You Keep Me High,” and “The Best of Love.” Personnel changes followed as Bobby and Tommy DeBarge left to work with their younger siblings in DeBarge, while Phillip Ingram moved into other recording, vocal, and production work.

A revised lineup recorded Am I Still Your Boyfriend? for Total Experience Records in 1984. The album included “Keeping Secrets,” “Switch It Baby,” “I’m So Satisfied,” and “I Won’t Give Up.” “Keeping Secrets” reached the British singles chart, while the album became the sixth and final studio release in Switch’s original discography.

Bobby DeBarge died in 1995 at the age of 39, and Tommy DeBarge died in 2021 at the age of 64. Founding member Eddie Fluellen died on April 14, 2025, at the age of 68. Switch had reunited years earlier with Gregory Williams, Phillip Ingram, Fluellen, Michael McGloiry, and Akili Nickson, bringing the group’s music back to the stage and introducing its catalog to another generation of R&B listeners.

Across six studio albums, Switch created a compact but enduring body of work. Their strongest recordings paired romantic songwriting with layered harmonies, fluid musicianship, and arrangements that could move from quiet balladry to dance-floor funk without losing the band’s identity. The group’s influence also extended into the rise of DeBarge, making Switch an important link between two defining chapters of late-1970s and early-1980s Motown-related R&B.
