Our Complete List Of Duran Duran Songs From A to Z includes all the songs from a band formed in 1978 around keyboardist Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, and singer and bassist Stephen Duffy, who took their name from Dr. Durand Durand, the character from the 1968 science fiction film Barbarella. The early lineup changed quickly, with Duffy and Simon Colley leaving in 1979, Roger Taylor joining on drums, John Taylor moving to bass, and the group finding its first real home as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in Birmingham. That club became more than a venue; it was the place where the band refined its sound, worked regular jobs, rehearsed, performed, and came under the management of Paul and Michael Berrow.
The classic lineup came together in 1980 when guitarist Andy Taylor arrived from Newcastle after answering an advertisement, and Simon Le Bon, a London vocalist and drama student, was recommended by a former girlfriend who worked at the Rum Runner. With Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Le Bon in place, Duran Duran performed together for the first time on July 16, 1980, at the Rum Runner. By September 1980, the band had written the material that would become its debut album. Touring as the opening act for Hazel O’Connor brought attention from record companies, and Duran Duran signed with EMI in December 1980 before recording their debut with producer Colin Thurston.
Duran Duran arrived in 1981 and placed the band immediately into the New Romantic movement while also pointing toward something bigger. “Planet Earth” reached number 12 in the United Kingdom, “Girls on Film” climbed to number 5, and the video for “Girls on Film” became a major part of the group’s early identity. The timing could not have been more important. MTV had launched in the United States just two weeks before that video was filmed, and Duran Duran became one of the defining acts of the music video era. Their image, fashion sense, cinematic videos, and sharp pop instincts helped place them at the center of the Second British Invasion in the United States.
Rio, released in 1982, turned Duran Duran into a worldwide phenomenon. “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Rio,” both supported by cinematic videos directed by Russell Mulcahy, became signature songs that fused pop melody, style, and visual drama into one package. Seven and the Ragged Tiger followed in 1983 and became the band’s only number one album in the United Kingdom. “The Reflex” reached number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom, while “The Wild Boys” added another major hit in 1984. In 1985, “A View to a Kill,” recorded for the James Bond film of the same name, became the first Bond theme to reach number one on the United States charts.
The pressure of that success reshaped the band. After side projects including Arcadia and the Power Station, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor left before the recording of Notorious in 1986. Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and John Taylor continued as the core trio, with Warren Cuccurullo later becoming a key member and Sterling Campbell joining for a period. The late 1980s and early 1990s brought uneven commercial results, but the 1993 album Duran Duran, often called The Wedding Album, gave the band a major second act through “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone.” John Taylor departed in 1997, but the classic lineup reunited in 2001, leading to successful tours and the 2004 album Astronaut, which reached number 3 in the United Kingdom. “(Reach Up for The) Sunrise” also gave them another major international dance hit and reached number 5 in the United Kingdom.
Duran Duran have released 16 studio albums, from Duran Duran in 1981 through Danse Macabre in 2023. Their catalog includes Rio, Seven and the Ragged Tiger, Notorious, Big Thing, Liberty, Thank You, Medazzaland, Pop Trash, Astronaut, Red Carpet Massacre, All You Need Is Now, Paper Gods, and Future Past. The numbers explain the scale of the career. They have sold more than 100 million records, placed 30 singles in the United Kingdom top 40, including 14 top ten hits, and landed 21 singles in the United States Billboard Hot 100 top 40. Their awards include two Brit Awards, two Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award for Lifetime Achievement, a Video Visionary Award from the MTV Europe Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
The band’s work outside standard album and tour cycles also became part of its identity. Duran Duran performed at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, in front of 90,000 people in Philadelphia and a television audience estimated at 1.5 billion. They also appeared at the Concert for Diana and Live Earth in 2007, covered John Lennon’s “Instant Karma!” for Amnesty International’s Make Some Noise campaign tied to Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur, and contributed a version of David Bowie’s “Boys Keep Swinging” to We Were So Turned On, a tribute and charity record benefiting War Child. In 2008, they performed at the Louvre in Paris as part of a fundraising effort that helped restore a Louis XV drawing room. Those appearances were specific, public, and tied to major cultural and charitable events, not vague gestures.
