Philadelphia gave Boyz II Men both their home and their foundation, with the group first coming together in 1985 at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson started the act under the name Unique Attraction, and the lineup soon expanded with Wanyá Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Michael McCary. Their path changed in 1989 after they sang an a cappella version of “Can You Stand the Rain” backstage at a Philadelphia Civic Center concert, impressing Michael Bivins of New Edition. That meeting led to management help and a deal with Motown Records. By the time their recording career truly began, Nelson had left, leaving the quartet of Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Michael McCary, who became internationally famous. The group’s name itself came from New Edition’s song “Boys to Men,” a fitting signal of the influence that helped shape their earliest years.

Their arrival on the national stage came fast in 1991 with Cooleyhighharmony, a debut that blended new jack swing production with richly layered soul vocals. Produced mainly by Dallas Austin, the album introduced “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” both of which reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. What separated Boyz II Men from many vocal groups was their shared lead approach. Wanyá Morris, Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Michael McCary each brought a distinct vocal role to the records, and that internal balance became one of the group’s defining strengths.

In 1992, while on tour with MC Hammer, they returned to the studio to record “End of the Road” for the Boomerang soundtrack. The single became one of the biggest records of the decade, spending 13 weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and setting a new chart record at the time.

The group’s commercial peak reached even higher with II in 1994. The album sold more than 12 million copies in the United States alone and became one of the biggest R&B albums of its era. Built with major contributions from Tim and Bob, Babyface, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album produced a remarkable run of hit singles, including “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bended Knee,” and “Water Runs Dry.” “I’ll Make Love to You” spent 14 weeks at Number 1, breaking the record set by “End of the Road,” and then “On Bended Knee” replaced it at the top, making Boyz II Men only the second act after the Beatles to replace themselves at Number 1 on the Hot 100.

Their run at the top extended further with “One Sweet Day,” the collaboration with Mariah Carey that also set a new record for weeks at Number 1. Those songs established the group not simply as hitmakers, but as one of the central commercial forces in 1990s pop and R&B.

Their studio catalog eventually grew to 14 albums, Cooleyhighharmony, Christmas Interpretations, II, Evolution, Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya, Full Circle, Throwback, Vol. 1, The Remedy, Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA, Love, Covered: Winter, Twenty, Collide, and Under the Streetlight. Not every later release matched the sales of the first two blockbusters, but the group remained active across changing label situations and changing eras. Evolution still produced major songs such as “A Song for Mama,” and the group continued recording through Michael McCary’s 2003 departure, after which Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman carried on as a trio. Their later years included a multi year residency at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 2013 through 2018, showing that their appeal remained strong well beyond their initial chart peak.

Awards followed them throughout the 1990s and beyond. Boyz II Men won four Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for Cooleyhighharmony and “End of the Road,” Best R&B Album for II, and another Grammy for “I’ll Make Love to You.”

They also won American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Song for “End of the Road,” Favorite Soul/R&B Single and Favorite Pop/Rock Song for “I’ll Make Love to You,” and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for II. Soul Train also recognized them with major honors, including Best New R&B/Soul Artist, Song of the Year for “End of the Road,” R&B/Soul Single Group, Band or Duo for “Please Don’t Go” and “I’ll Make Love to You,” R&B/Soul Album Group, Band or Duo for II, and Entertainer of the Year. Those awards reflect how thoroughly the group dominated the intersection of mainstream pop success and core R&B credibility.

Their story outside straight album releases includes specific projects and public milestones that helped keep their name visible in popular culture. They appeared on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1993, Moesha in 2000, How I Met Your Mother in 2014, Live in Front of a Studio Audience in 2021, and Barmageddon in 2023. They also recorded “The City of Brothery Love” for Jam Van, which brought them a Children’s and Family Emmy nomination in 2023. In Philadelphia, Broad Street from Christian to Carpenter Streets was renamed Boyz II Men Boulevard, a civic honor that tied the group permanently to their hometown.
