Keane, the alternative rock band from Battle, East Sussex, England, built one of the most distinctive sounds in British rock by centering the piano as the lead instrument rather than the guitar, a deliberate choice that immediately set them apart from nearly every other rock band of their era. Formed in 1995 under the name Lotus Eaters while Tim Rice-Oxley was studying at University College London, the group went through several lineup changes and years of grinding the London pub circuit before landing a deal with Island Records in 2003. The current lineup, Tom Chaplin on lead vocals, Rice-Oxley on keyboards, Richard Hughes on drums, and Jesse Quin on bass, refined that piano-driven approach into a sound that resonated on both sides of the Atlantic.
Their debut album, Hopes and Fears, released in May 2004, debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, was certified nine-times platinum in the UK, sold approximately 5.5 million copies worldwide, and stands as one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history. It produced breakthrough singles including “Somewhere Only We Know,” “Everybody’s Changing,” and “Bedshaped,” and earned the band two 2005 BRIT Awards; Best British Album and the British Breakthrough Act as voted by BBC Radio 1 listeners. Rice-Oxley also took home the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year. Their second album, Under the Iron Sea (2006), topped the UK chart and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. Perfect Symmetry (2008) hit number one in the UK and number seven on the Billboard 200, and was later voted best British album of all time by Q Magazine and HMV. Strangeland (2012) gave the band their fourth UK number one album.
After a hiatus, they returned in 2019 with Cause and Effect, their fifth studio album. Keane have sold over 13 million records worldwide and received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist at the 48th Grammy Awards.
Beyond recording and touring, Keane have been active on multiple charitable fronts. They performed at the Live 8 concert in London on 2 July 2005 as members of the Make Poverty History campaign, an international effort to eliminate global poverty, with Chaplin’s early gap year spent volunteering in South Africa directly informing the band’s commitment to that cause. They became official patrons of War Child, the UK charity dedicated to supporting children affected by armed conflict, and recorded a cover of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” for the charity album Help: A Day in the Life.
They also performed at the UK leg of Live Earth at Wembley Stadium on 7 July 2007, a globally coordinated concert series designed to raise awareness about climate change. On the songwriting side, Rice-Oxley co-wrote “Early Winter” for Gwen Stefani’s album The Sweet Escape and co-wrote “Everything Is Beautiful” for Kylie Minogue’s album Aphrodite, while Chaplin collaborated with Dutch singer Laura Jansen on “Same Heart” for a Dutch charity radio program. In 2024, the band embarked on the Keane20 World Tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hopes and Fears, reissuing the landmark album and reconnecting with a global fanbase that has never stopped claiming it as essential.
