George Jones recorded one of the deepest catalogs in country music history, with a voice capable of making a simple line sound like an entire life story. Born in Saratoga, Texas, on September 12, 1931, he was raised in a musical household and began performing in the honky-tonks of East Texas. His first Starday releases in the 1950s established his fierce, high-country singing style before he recorded many of the songs that would make him a household name.
Jones moved through Starday, Mercury, United Artists, Musicor, Epic, and later labels while developing a sound that never lost its roots. Early favorites such as “Why Baby Why,” “White Lightning,” “The Window Up Above,” and “She Thinks I Still Care” led to defining country recordings like “The Grand Tour,” “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” and “The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song).” Alongside those hits are hundreds of album tracks, gospel performances, rockabilly sides, and songs first issued on singles or archival collections.
His duet recordings are a major part of that history. George Jones worked with Melba Montgomery, Gene Pitney, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, and other musicians, but his records with Tammy Wynette occupy a special place in country music. Their performances of “We’re Gonna Hold On,” “Golden Ring,” “Near You,” and “Two Story House” stand alongside solo recordings that turned everyday heartbreak and endurance into enduring music.
Jones died on April 26, 2013, following a career that stretched across nearly six decades. His recorded legacy continued to grow through historical reissues and posthumous releases, including The Lost Nashville Sessions in 2024. The alphabetical list below brings together officially released solo performances, distinct duets, album tracks, early singles, and select archival recordings, with the earliest identifiable issue credited wherever possible.
