The Band developed a sound that changed the course of American rock music, even though four of its five best-known members came from Canada. Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson drew on blues, gospel, soul, country, folk, and early rock and roll. Their recordings sounded steeped in American musical history without simply recreating the past. The voices of Helm, Manuel, and Danko were especially important, bringing different personalities to songs that still feel remarkable decades later.
The musicians first came together while playing in Ronnie Hawkins’s backing group, the Hawks, during the late 1950s and early 1960s. After going out on their own, they recorded as the Canadian Squires and Levon and the Hawks before working with Bob Dylan during his controversial electric period. Their time with Dylan led to the Woodstock-area recordings later associated with The Basement Tapes. Those sessions helped establish the musical language that listeners would recognize when the group adopted the name The Band.
Their 1968 debut, Music from Big Pink, introduced enduring songs such as “The Weight,” “Tears of Rage,” and “I Shall Be Released.” The following year, The Band delivered “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Rag Mama Rag,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Albums including Stage Fright, Cahoots, and Northern Lights – Southern Cross carried the group through the 1970s. They also proved to be a formidable concert act, as documented on Rock of Ages and the farewell concert film and soundtrack The Last Waltz.
Robbie Robertson stopped touring with the group after the 1976 farewell performance, and the original quintet never recorded another studio album together. The Band returned to the road in 1983 without Robertson. Richard Manuel died in 1986, but the remaining musicians continued with a revised lineup that included Jim Weider, Richard Bell, and Randy Ciarlante. The reunion years produced Jericho, High on the Hog, and Jubilation, a final album released in 1998, a year before Rick Danko’s death.
The song collection below covers the ten core studio albums, non-album sides, selected important officially released archival tracks, and material made with Bob Dylan. It also identifies distinctive performances from The Last Waltz and other collaborative releases. Rather than repeating every live performance or remastered version of the same song, the entries emphasize the original releases and recordings with a separate musical identity. The album lists that follow include studio records, live albums, collaborations, and major compilation releases.
