THE GUESS WHO STUDIO ALBUMS

Shakin’ All Over

Shakin’ All Over stands as the debut album by The Guess Who. At the time, they were known as Chad Allan & the Expressions. Wow, now talk about a name change. The album is particularly notable for its standout title track, a riveting rendition of Johnny Kidd & the Pirates’ hit “Shakin’ All Over,” which propelled the band into the limelight. The album was recorded between 1963 and 1964 at Kay Bank Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota,

The band’s lineup for this album featured Chad Allan leading with vocals and rhythm guitar, complemented by Randy Bachman’s dynamic lead guitar and backing vocals. Jim Kale provided the rhythmic backbone with his bass and backing vocals, while Garry Peterson’s drumming injected the necessary pulse into the music. Bob Ashley’s contributions on keyboards and backing vocals added layers to the band’s sound,

The title track “Shakin’ All Over” emerged as a monumental hit, securing the top spot on Canadian charts and achieving significant success internationally, with notable rankings in Australia and on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Another track from the album, “Tossin’ and Turnin’,” also garnered acclaim, reaching the third position in Canada, further cementing the band’s status in the rock music scene.

Hey Ho (What You Do to Me!)

Hey Ho (What You Do to Me!) stands as the sophomore studio effort by  The Guess Who. Released in 1965, this album is the final project to feature Bob Ashley on keyboards, marking the end of an early era for the band. Recorded between 1963 and 1965 across two distinct locations, CJAY-TV Studio B in Winnipeg and Scepter Studios in New York, the album delves into the garage rock genre—a raw and energetic style that was particularly influential during the mid-60s.

Produced by Bob Burns and released under the Quality label, the album showcases the collective talents of the band: Chad Allan’s compelling lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Randy Bachman’s intricate lead guitar work and backing vocals, Jim Kale’s steady basslines and backing vocals, Garry Peterson’s vigorous drumming, and Bob Ashley’s lively keyboards and backing vocals. The title track, “Hey Ho, What You Do to Me,” achieved significant success in Canada, reaching number three on the charts. It hit number 125 on the Billboard Hit 100,

Wheatfield Soul

Wheatfield Soul is the fourth studio release from the Canadian rock ensemble The Guess Who, making its debut in March 1969. This album stands out as the inaugural full-length project by the band that showcased Burton Cummings as the sole lead vocalist, following the departure of the original frontman, Chad Allan. The record is distinguished by the inclusion of “These Eyes,” a top 10 hit in the United States, heralding the band’s ascent to global recognition.

Regarding its release, Wheatfield Soul did not initially meet with commercial acclaim. The track “These Eyes” was put forth as a single from the album, which also represented the band’s first venture into psychedelic music. The album embodies a blend of British-inspired pop and rock elements.

The ensemble’s lineup on the album featured Burton Cummings taking on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, and flute, with Randy Bachman on lead guitar and backing vocals. Jim Kale contributed bass and backing vocals, and Garry Peterson was on drums. In terms of chart performance in 1969, Wheatfield Soul secured the 3rd spot on Canada’s Top Albums/CDs as per RPM, and it reached number 45 on the US Billboard 200.

Canned Wheat

Canned Wheat marks the fifth album from The Guess Who, released in September 1969.  Notably, it includes the hits “Laughing” and “Undun,” along with an early version of “No Time,” which the band would later revise for their American Woman album, eventually releasing it as a hit single.

For this album, The Guess Who headed to RCA Studios in New York, following a contractual obligation with RCA that required its artists to record in-house. The chart success of these singles rushed RCA into releasing an album. Thus, Canned Wheat was published with the initial RCA recordings, except for the A&R versions of “Laughing” and “Undun.”

Contributing to this album, Burton Cummings took the lead with vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, flute, and harmonica. Randy Bachman was on lead guitar and vocals, Jim Kale on bass and vocals, and Garry Peterson added his skills on drums and vocals. Production was led by Jack Richardson.

American Woman

Released at the dawn of the 1970s, American Woman stands as the Guess Who’s sixth studio endeavor and became a hallmark in their discography, marking January 1970 as a pivotal moment in the band’s history. This album is notably the final collaboration with lead guitarist Randy Bachman before his departure, only to return briefly for a reunion in the early ’80s. Achieving significant acclaim, American Woman was adorned with Gold status in the United States, underscoring its widespread appeal.

Among the treasures within this album are some of the Guess Who’s most celebrated tracks. The eponymous “American Woman,” paired with “No Sugar Tonight,” soared to the top of charts in both Canada and the United States.  Additionally, the album breathed new life into “No Time,” a track initially introduced in their previous work, Canned Wheat. This refreshed version, released as a standalone single, resonated deeply with audiences, cementing its place as the definitive rendition of the song.
