Founded in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and vocalist Tarja Turunen, Nightwish initially came together around Holopainen’s idea of atmospheric acoustic music before evolving toward metal. The band’s lineup continued to take shape around the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First. Although this debut saw moderate success in Finland, it wasn’t until their 1998 album, Oceanborn, that they achieved significant critical acclaim.
