Longtime fans of New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen will be happy to know that the Boss will be appearing on CBS Sunday Morning April 30, 2023, at 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time. The interview focuses on what many fans and critics define as one of Springsteen’s most compelling albums. In 1981, Bruce Springsteen shocked the music world by releasing an album recorded alone on a Tascam four-track cassette tape machine. The album called Nebraska stood as the follow-up to the big sounding two record set The River in which Springsteen had looked to capture the energy of his live shows on vinyl. The Nebraska album presented a sound that was about as far away from his powerful live shows that he could get. It would also set the tone for a style of writing and performing that he has gone back to throughout his career multiple times on albums like The Ghost Of Tom Joad, Devils And Dust, and his one man show Springsteen On Broadway.
Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska album was a record in which Bruce Springsteen had begun to search for answers about his own life. Yet, fans like myself who were in their early 20s or late teens saw it as an album of stories. It was the way Springsteen wrote. He never spelled anything out. Meanings were always hidden behind the art, and left to be interpreted. It’s the power of brilliant artistry. Of course, young listeners sometimes can lack the life experiences to comprehend the art and its possible intentions. It’s interesting to listen to an album forty years later and hear all that was missed the first few times as a young fan.
Springsteen had always painted pictures of colorful romantic type characters that seemed to be heavily influenced by movies like West Side Story, The Wild One etc… It’s what first attracted his young audience in the 1970s. That story began to change as Sprinsgteen himself began to mature and enter his 30s. Fans first caught a glimpse of it on the title track to The River album in which he wrote about failed marriage and lost hope.
According to those involved in the CBS interview, Springsteen argues that it’s the Nebraska album that represents who he is now in the present. He states that it represents him more than any of his other albums. For the interview, Bruce Springsteen sits down with Jim Axelrod and talks about the importance of the Nebraska album. Fans will be thrilled to find that the interview takes place in the Colts Neck, N.J. farmhouse where Springsteen recorded the album. The interview also coincides with a new book written by Warren Zanes entitled Deliver Me from Nowhere. The book is all about the making of the Nebraska album.
