Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Emerging from the grunge music scene, the band quickly became one of the most prominent and influential groups of the 1990s. Their significance in the music industry is marked by a blend of rock, heavy metal, punk, and classic rock influences that helped shape their unique sound. Pearl Jam has been recognized with numerous awards, including Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, highlighting their impact and longevity in the music world.

The band released their first single, “Alive,” followed by their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten went on to become one of the best-selling rock albums of its era, solidifying Pearl Jam’s place in music history. Pearl Jam has released twelve studio albums, numerous live albums, and a variety of EPs and compilations. Their twelfth studio album, Dark Matter, was released in 2024.

Pearl Jam drew inspiration from a range of artists, including Neil Young, The Who, and Led Zeppelin, blending intense rock sounds with introspective lyrics. In turn, they have influenced a wide array of bands and artists across genres, contributing to the development of alternative rock and beyond. Following Matt Cameron’s departure in 2025, Pearl Jam’s official band lineup consists of Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament.

CURRENT PEARL JAM BAND MEMBERS

Eddie Vedder

Eddie Vedder, the lead vocalist and one of the principal lyricists of Pearl Jam, joined the band in 1990. Vedder’s distinctive baritone voice and dynamic stage presence have been central to the band’s identity. He has been with Pearl Jam since its formation and has contributed to all of their albums through Dark Matter. Vedder’s work outside the band includes solo projects such as the soundtrack for the film Into the Wild, for which he received a Golden Globe Award for the song “Guaranteed.”

Eddie Vedder’s songwriting spans a broad spectrum, addressing both deeply personal issues and wider social and political themes. His work with Pearl Jam on tracks like “Alive” and “Better Man” delves into personal narratives, while songs such as “Even Flow” and “World Wide Suicide” reflect on societal issues. Vedder’s lyrics often employ storytelling, exploring themes of freedom, individualism, loss, and empathy for those in distress.

Although primarily known for his vocal contributions, Vedder’s role in Pearl Jam expanded to include guitar playing and a variety of other instruments. His influence extended to the overall sound of the band as Pearl Jam moved away from the immediate commercial expectations surrounding its early success. Vedder has also played ukulele, harmonica, accordion, and other instruments on recordings and in concert.

Vedder’s live performances with Pearl Jam are known for their intensity. During the band’s early years, he became famous for stage diving, crowd surfing, and climbing stage structures. Pearl Jam concerts have also frequently served as a platform for Vedder’s social and political commentary, adding another dimension to the band’s live identity.

Mike McCready

Mike McCready, the lead guitarist, has been with Pearl Jam since its inception. His blues-influenced guitar playing is a staple of the band’s sound. McCready has played on all twelve Pearl Jam studio albums, contributing memorable solos and co-writing several of the band’s songs. His work remained a major part of Dark Matter in 2024. Outside Pearl Jam, McCready has participated in various side projects, including Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and The Rockfords. He is also known for raising awareness of Crohn’s disease, with which he was diagnosed as a teenager.

Stone Gossard

Rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard is one of Pearl Jam’s founding members. Before Pearl Jam, Gossard played in Green River and Mother Love Bone, the latter of which became an important precursor to Pearl Jam after the death of singer Andrew Wood. Gossard has been integral in shaping Pearl Jam’s musical direction and has contributed to the songwriting and production of the band’s albums throughout its career, including Dark Matter. Gossard has also been involved in other musical projects, including Brad and Temple of the Dog, and has released solo work.

Jeff Ament

Bassist Jeff Ament is another founding member of Pearl Jam. Along with Gossard, he was part of Green River and Mother Love Bone. Ament’s contributions to Pearl Jam extend beyond his bass playing; he has also been involved in the band’s visual presentation, including album artwork and design. Ament has performed on all twelve Pearl Jam studio albums through Dark Matter. He has pursued other musical interests outside Pearl Jam, including Three Fish, Tres Mts., RNDM, and solo work.

FORMER PEARL JAM BAND MEMBERS

Matt Cameron

Matt Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998 after previously establishing himself as the drummer for Soundgarden. He initially stepped in during the Yield touring cycle after Jack Irons left the band and soon became Pearl Jam’s permanent drummer. Cameron’s first Pearl Jam studio album was Binaural in 2000, and he played on every Pearl Jam studio album from Binaural through Dark Matter in 2024. His powerful, precise drumming and deep roots in the Seattle music scene made him a defining member of the band for 27 years.

Cameron also rejoined Soundgarden when the group reunited in 2010 and remained with them until the death of Chris Cornell in 2017 while continuing his work with Pearl Jam. On July 7, 2025, Cameron announced that he had left Pearl Jam after 27 years. The band thanked him for the enormous role he played in its live shows and recordings. Cameron had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Pearl Jam in 2017.

Dave Krusen

Dave Krusen was Pearl Jam’s original drummer and played on their debut album Ten. His tenure with the band was short-lived, as personal issues and struggles with alcohol led to his departure in 1991 shortly after the album was completed. Despite his brief time with Pearl Jam, Krusen’s drumming on Ten contributed to the album’s massive success. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam in 2017 and performed “Alive” with the band during the induction ceremony.

Matt Chamberlain

Matt Chamberlain served as Pearl Jam’s drummer for a brief period in 1991 following the departure of Dave Krusen. Chamberlain played several live performances with the band and appeared in the “Alive” music video, but he did not record a Pearl Jam studio album. He left to join the Saturday Night Live band and recommended Dave Abbruzzese as his replacement. Chamberlain later became one of the most sought-after session drummers in the music business, working with a wide range of artists across numerous genres.

Dave Abbruzzese

Dave Abbruzzese replaced Matt Chamberlain in 1991 and became Pearl Jam’s drummer during the touring cycle for Ten. He played on the band’s second album, Vs., and performed on most of Vitalogy. His drumming was pivotal to Pearl Jam’s sound during the band’s explosive rise in the early 1990s. Abbruzzese left the group in 1994 amid personal and musical differences. He was not among the Pearl Jam members formally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Jack Irons

Jack Irons, a founding member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, became Pearl Jam’s drummer in 1994 after Dave Abbruzzese’s departure. Irons contributed to Vitalogy and was the primary drummer on No Code and Yield. His distinctive rhythmic style added a new dimension to Pearl Jam’s music during a period when the band was becoming increasingly experimental. Irons left Pearl Jam in 1998 because of health concerns connected with the demands of touring. Matt Cameron replaced him for the Yield tour and ultimately became the band’s longest-serving drummer.

LONGTIME PEARL JAM TOURING MUSICIANS

Boom Gaspar

Kenneth “Boom” Gaspar became Pearl Jam’s longtime touring keyboardist in 2002 after meeting Eddie Vedder in Hawaii. Gaspar has performed keyboards, organ, and piano with the band for more than two decades and has also contributed to Pearl Jam studio recordings. Although he has become a familiar presence at Pearl Jam concerts, the band’s official biography has continued to distinguish him from its formal member lineup.

Josh Klinghoffer

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer joined Pearl Jam as a touring multi-instrumentalist in 2021. He contributed guitar, keyboards, percussion, and backing vocals during concerts and continued touring with Pearl Jam through the Dark Matter era. Klinghoffer also contributed additional instrumentation to Dark Matter. His role expanded Pearl Jam’s live arrangements without making him part of the band’s official core lineup.
