American Authors formed in 2006 while the members were attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. The group later moved to Brooklyn, New York. The original American Authors lineup consisted of Zac Barnett on vocals and guitar, James Adam Shelley on guitar and banjo, Dave Rublin on bass, and Matt Sanchez on drums. Shelley left the band in 2021, and American Authors continued as the trio of Barnett, Rublin, and Sanchez. The band gained fame with the hit single “Best Day of My Life” from its debut album Oh, What a Life.

American Authors have released five studio albums: Oh, What a Life (2014), What We Live For (2016), Seasons (2019), Best Night of My Life (2023), and Call Your Mother (2024). Their music is known for its upbeat, anthemic style, combining elements of indie rock and pop. American Authors have achieved significant chart success, with “Best Day of My Life” reaching number eleven on the US Billboard Hot 100. The band also released the holiday album Favorite Time of the Year in 2025.

What We Live For (2016)

What We Live For is American Authors’ second studio album, continuing their blend of indie rock and pop with uplifting themes. The album featured Zac Barnett on vocals, James Adam Shelley on guitar and banjo, Dave Rublin on bass, and Matt Sanchez on drums. It was produced primarily by Aaron Accetta and Shep Goodman, with Frequency producing “Mess With Your Heart.” Released on July 1, 2016, the album peaked at number sixty on the US Billboard 200.

Seasons is American Authors’ third studio album, featuring a more mature sound and exploring deeper lyrical themes. The album featured Zac Barnett on vocals, James Adam Shelley on guitar and banjo, Dave Rublin on bass, and Matt Sanchez on drums. It was produced by Cason Cooley and released on February 1, 2019.

It was released independently through French Poet Society on February 10, 2023, and was produced primarily by Matt Sanchez and American Authors.
