The Spencer Davis Group is a British rock band formed in Birmingham in 1963. The original lineup consisted of Spencer Davis (guitar, vocals), Steve Winwood (vocals, organ, guitar), Muff Winwood (bass), and Pete York (drums). The band achieved success in the mid-1960s with hits like “Keep On Running,” “Somebody Help Me,” “Gimme Some Lovin’,” and “I’m a Man.”

The band released eight studio albums: Their First LP (1965), The Second Album (1966), Autumn ’66 (1966), With Their New Face On (1968), Funky (1970), Gluggo (1973), Living in a Back Street (1974), and Vibrate (1986). They are known for their energetic performances, soulful sound, and significant contributions to the British Invasion era of the 1960s.

Despite numerous lineup changes and breaks over the years, later versions of The Spencer Davis Group continued to tour. Spencer Davis, the band’s namesake, passed away in 2020, effectively bringing the group’s later touring era to an end. The band’s music continues to be celebrated by fans worldwide.

Their First LP is the debut studio album by The Spencer Davis Group, released in June 1965. The album features a mix of R&B, blues, and rock, showcasing the powerful vocals of Steve Winwood and the band’s energetic style. The album reached number six on the UK Albums Chart.

The Second Album (1966)

The Second Album is The Spencer Davis Group’s second studio album, released on January 7, 1966. The album includes “Keep On Running,” which became the group’s first number-one single in the UK. “Somebody Help Me,” their second UK number-one hit, was released shortly afterward and appeared on Autumn ’66.

With Their New Face On (1968)

With Their New Face On is The Spencer Davis Group’s fourth studio album and the first album released after Steve and Muff Winwood left the band. Eddie Hardin joined on keyboards and vocals, and Ray Fenwick became the group’s lead guitarist after Phil Sawyer’s departure.

The album features Eddie Hardin on vocals and keyboards, Ray Fenwick on guitar and vocals, Spencer Davis on guitar and vocals, and Pete York on drums. It was produced by Spencer Davis, Mike Hurst, and Eddie Hardin.

Funky (1970)

Released: 1970 in the United States in a limited, quickly withdrawn edition; first full UK release in 1998

Funky is The Spencer Davis Group’s fifth studio album. It was originally planned for release in the United Kingdom under the title Letters from Edith, but the release was withdrawn. A limited U.S. edition appeared on Date Records as Funky in 1970 before the album later received a full reissue.

The recording features Spencer Davis on guitar and backing vocals, Ray Fenwick on lead vocals and guitar, Dee Murray on bass and backing vocals, Nigel Olsson on drums and backing vocals, with additional contributions including Kirk Duncan on keyboards. It was produced by Lewis Merenstein and arranged by Ray Fenwick.

Gluggo is The Spencer Davis Group’s sixth studio album. It marked the return of Eddie Hardin and Pete York and featured Ray Fenwick and bassist Charlie McCracken alongside Spencer Davis.

The album features Spencer Davis on rhythm guitar and vocals, Eddie Hardin on keyboards and vocals, Ray Fenwick on lead guitar and vocals, Charlie McCracken on bass and vocals, and Pete York on drums. It was produced by The Spencer Davis Group and recorded primarily at Morgan Studios, with “Catch You on the Rebop” recorded at Advision Studios.
