The Mavericks, an eclectic band blending country, rock, Latin, and jazz influences, formed in Miami, Florida, in 1989. The original lineup featured Raul Malo on vocals and guitar, Paul Deakin on drums, Robert Reynolds on bass, and Ben Peeler on guitar and other stringed instruments. They quickly gained attention in the alternative country scene for their distinctive sound, standing apart from traditional country music. Their self-titled independent debut album was released in 1990 on Y&T Music, and their major-label debut, From Hell to Paradise, followed in 1992.

The Mavericks achieved commercial success with their 1994 album What a Crying Shame, which featured songs such as the title track and “O What a Thrill.” They followed it with Music for All Occasions in 1995, and “Here Comes the Rain” earned the band a Grammy Award in 1996. After their initial breakup in 2000 and a brief 2003 reunion, the band came together again in the early 2010s. Their later albums included In Time (2013), Mono (2015), Brand New Day (2017), En Español (2020), and Moon & Stars (2024).

Raul Malo remained the creative center and lead voice of The Mavericks until his death from cancer on December 8, 2025, at the age of 60. The band’s official website now states that The Mavericks will continue as The Mavericks & Friends, with Paul Deakin, Jerry Dale McFadden, and Eddie Perez carrying the music forward with guest singers. Robert Reynolds has also returned to the lineup after a ten-year absence, reconnecting the group with its original rhythm section.

Raul Malo

Raul Malo co-founded The Mavericks in 1989 and served as the band’s lead vocalist, guitarist, principal songwriter, and creative leader. His voice became the defining sound of the group across every era of their career, from the independent 1990 debut through Moon & Stars in 2024. Malo wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s best-known songs, including “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” “Dance the Night Away,” and “Here Comes the Rain.” He also maintained a substantial solo career outside the band.

Malo remained active with The Mavericks through his cancer treatment until illness forced him off the road in 2025. He died on December 8, 2025. His influence remains central to the band’s identity as The Mavericks continue performing his music in a new format.

Paul Deakin

Paul Deakin co-founded The Mavericks in 1989 and has been the band’s drummer throughout its major periods of activity. His playing appears across the group’s catalog, from the early independent recordings through the later reunion albums. Deakin returned when the group re-formed in the early 2010s and remains part of the current Mavericks lineup. The band’s official website identifies him as one of the musicians carrying the group forward after Raul Malo’s death.

Jerry Dale McFadden

Jerry Dale McFadden began performing with The Mavericks as a touring keyboardist in 1994 and became one of the band’s most recognizable longtime collaborators. His piano, organ, vocals, and stage presence became part of the group’s sound from the mid-1990s onward. McFadden later became a full member during the reunion era and contributed to albums including In Time, Mono, Brand New Day, En Español, and Moon & Stars.

Outside The Mavericks, McFadden also worked with Sixpence None the Richer and performed on material from their Divine Discontent period. He remains part of the current Mavericks lineup.

Eddie Perez

Eddie Perez joined The Mavericks during their 2003 reunion, replacing Nick Kane on lead guitar. He returned when the band reunited again in the early 2010s and became a central part of the group’s later sound. Perez contributed to albums including In Time, Mono, Brand New Day, En Español, and Moon & Stars. Before joining The Mavericks, he played with Dwight Yoakam. Perez remains part of the current Mavericks lineup and is one of the musicians leading the band’s continuation as The Mavericks & Friends.

Robert Reynolds

Robert Reynolds co-founded The Mavericks in 1989 and served as the band’s bassist and backing vocalist through several major periods of its career. His bass work helped anchor the early albums, including From Hell to Paradise, What a Crying Shame, and Music for All Occasions. Reynolds returned during the band’s later reunion but left the group in 2014.

In 2026, The Mavericks announced that Reynolds had returned after a ten-year absence. His return restores the original rhythm-section partnership between Reynolds and drummer Paul Deakin and gives the band’s current incarnation a direct connection to its earliest years.

Ben Peeler

Ben Peeler was part of The Mavericks’ original lineup and played guitar, banjo, dobro, lap steel, mandolin, and other stringed instruments on the band’s self-titled 1990 debut. His playing gave the earliest version of The Mavericks a strong roots-music texture. Peeler departed before the band’s first MCA album, From Hell to Paradise, and continued working as a musician after his time with the group.

David Lee Holt

David Lee Holt joined The Mavericks in 1991 and played guitar on the band’s first major-label album, From Hell to Paradise. His guitar work became part of the band’s sound during its move from the Miami club scene into the national country market. Holt remained with The Mavericks for a little over a year before moving on to other projects, including work with Joe Ely.

Nick Kane

Nick Kane became The Mavericks’ lead guitarist during the 1990s and was part of the lineup during the band’s most commercially successful period. His playing is associated with the group’s mid-career albums, including Music for All Occasions and Trampoline. Kane remained with the band until its original breakup in 2000. Eddie Perez later took over the lead-guitar role when The Mavericks reunited in 2003.
