Complete List Of Soundgarden Songs From A to Z

Soundgarden helped build the foundation of grunge while creating a catalog that reached far beyond any single genre, combining heavy metal, punk, psychedelia, unusual time signatures, towering vocals, and some of the most inventive guitar writing to emerge from Seattle. This complete A-to-Z guide gathers the band’s studio recordings, early EP tracks, B-sides, soundtrack songs, covers, instrumentals, remixes, compilation exclusives, and officially released rarities from across its career.

Seattle in the mid-1980s was a breeding ground for musical revolution, and among the earliest architects of what would become known as grunge was Soundgarden. Formed in 1984 by vocalist and drummer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, the band carved out a distinct identity with heavy, down-tuned guitars and Cornell’s soaring vocals. As Cornell shifted to focus solely on singing in 1985, Scott Sundquist was briefly brought in on drums before being replaced by Matt Cameron the following year. Yamamoto departed in 1989, and after a short-lived stint with former Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman, Soundgarden found its definitive bassist in Ben Shepherd in 1990. This final lineup, Cornell, Thayil, Cameron, and Shepherd, took the band to its greatest commercial and artistic heights.

Starting with the independent Seattle label Sub Pop, Soundgarden released the Screaming Life (1987) and Fopp (1988) EPs before delivering its debut full-length album, Ultramega OK, in 1988. The album’s raw, metallic edge earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance, setting Soundgarden apart from many of its contemporaries. Its major-label breakthrough came with 1989’s Louder Than Love, released on A&M Records. The album blended metal, punk, and psychedelic rock while foreshadowing the seismic impact the group would soon have.

The band’s profile rose dramatically with Badmotorfinger (1991), a record that stood as a defining statement of uncompromising power. Songs like “Jesus Christ Pose,” “Outshined,” and “Rusty Cage” received extensive airplay on alternative radio and MTV. Soundgarden toured extensively, opening for Guns N’ Roses and performing at Lollapalooza, further cementing its reputation as one of the most formidable live acts of the era.

Soundgarden’s commercial peak arrived with 1994’s Superunknown, an album that not only defined the band’s legacy but also became a cornerstone of 1990s rock. Debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, the album delivered enduring songs including “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman,” “Fell on Black Days,” and “The Day I Tried to Live.” “Black Hole Sun” won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance, while “Spoonman” won Best Metal Performance.

Following the success of Superunknown, Soundgarden returned in 1996 with Down on the Upside, which showcased a more experimental and diverse sonic palette. Tracks like “Blow Up the Outside World,” “Burden in My Hand,” and “Pretty Noose” became radio staples, but tensions within the band mounted. By 1997, the group had disbanded, citing creative differences. Cornell pursued a solo career and later fronted Audioslave, Cameron joined Pearl Jam, and the other members continued with separate musical projects.

More than a decade later, Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released King Animal in 2012. The album demonstrated that the band’s force, rhythmic complexity, and melodic instincts remained intact. The 2014 collection Echo of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across the Path then assembled B-sides, covers, instrumentals, remixes, and previously unreleased recordings from across more than twenty-five years of the band’s history.

Tragedy struck in 2017 when Chris Cornell died following a Soundgarden concert in Detroit. The surviving members participated in the 2019 I Am the Highway tribute concert, honoring Cornell alongside an extensive group of artists. Soundgarden was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025, with the surviving members, original bassist Hiro Yamamoto, guest vocalists, and Cornell’s daughter Toni participating in the ceremony.

By 2026, Thayil, Cameron, and Shepherd were continuing work on the final recordings made with Cornell before his death. Those unreleased songs are not included in this A-to-Z catalog because their titles and finished recordings had not yet been officially issued.

Soundgarden earned two Grammy Awards from eight nominations and influenced generations of musicians through a singular fusion of Black Sabbath-inspired heaviness, punk aggression, psychedelic texture, and unusual rhythmic structures. Cornell’s humanitarian work, including the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation’s support for vulnerable children, further extended the legacy surrounding the band and its music.
