Alter Bridge was formed in 2004 in Orlando, Florida, by guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips, bassist Brian Marshall, and vocalist and guitarist Myles Kennedy. Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshall had previously played together in Creed, while Kennedy had fronted The Mayfield Four before joining the new band. Alter Bridge released its debut album, One Day Remains, in 2004 and quickly established a heavier and more progressive identity than the members’ previous work. The same four-man lineup has remained intact throughout the band’s career.

Alter Bridge followed its debut with Blackbird (2007), AB III (2010), Fortress (2013), The Last Hero (2016), Walk the Sky (2019), Pawns & Kings (2022), and the self-titled Alter Bridge in 2026. The band’s music combines hard rock, heavy metal, alternative metal, progressive elements, melodic songwriting, and the contrasting guitar and vocal styles of Kennedy and Tremonti. Alter Bridge has also built a strong international touring audience while each member has continued working on major projects outside the band.

Here is a closer look at the four members of Alter Bridge and the musical careers they have built both inside and outside the group.

Myles Kennedy

Myles Kennedy is Alter Bridge’s lead vocalist and a rhythm and lead guitarist. He joined the group at its formation in 2004 after previously fronting The Mayfield Four, the Spokane-based band he formed in 1996. Kennedy’s wide vocal range, melodic phrasing, and guitar work became central to Alter Bridge’s identity from the beginning. Although much of One Day Remains had been written before he joined, Kennedy became an increasingly important songwriter and guitarist as the band developed. His contributions expanded dramatically on Blackbird, including the title track, where he shares the extended guitar solo with Mark Tremonti.

Kennedy has remained on every Alter Bridge studio album through the self-titled Alter Bridge in 2026. Outside the band, he became the lead vocalist for Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators after first working with Slash in 2010. Kennedy has also developed a solo career that includes Year of the Tiger (2018), The Ides of March (2021), and The Art of Letting Go (2024). His ability to move between Alter Bridge’s heavy sound, Slash’s guitar-driven hard rock, and his own solo material has made him one of the most versatile rock vocalists and guitarists of his generation.

Mark Tremonti

Mark Tremonti is Alter Bridge’s lead guitarist, a principal songwriter, backing vocalist, and occasional lead vocalist. He co-founded the band in 2004 after Creed became inactive and brought many of the musical ideas that became One Day Remains. Tremonti’s combination of heavy riffing, melodic solos, alternate tunings, and precise technique helped establish the musical foundation of Alter Bridge. As the band evolved, his writing partnership with Myles Kennedy became one of its defining strengths. Tremonti has also taken lead vocals on Alter Bridge songs including “Waters Rising” and “Forever Falling.”

Tremonti has appeared on all eight Alter Bridge studio albums through 2026. Outside Alter Bridge, he returned to activity with Creed and also fronts his own band, Tremonti, which has allowed him to move even further into heavy metal while serving as lead vocalist and guitarist. His Tremonti catalog continued with The End Will Show Us How in 2025. He has also explored standards associated with Frank Sinatra through his charitable Sinatra-focused recordings and performances, showing a very different side of his vocal work.

Brian Marshall

Brian Marshall is Alter Bridge’s bassist and one of the band’s four founding members. He had previously played with Mark Tremonti and Scott Phillips in Creed before joining the new group in 2004. Marshall’s bass gives Alter Bridge a deep, heavy foundation while leaving room for Tremonti and Kennedy’s layered guitars. He played on One Day Remains and remained with Alter Bridge for Blackbird in 2007, AB III in 2010, and every studio album that followed. His playing is an important part of the band’s heavier grooves and more complex arrangements.

Marshall did not leave Alter Bridge after the debut album. The confusion comes from his history with Creed, which he had left in 2000 before returning to that band in 2009 for Full Circle and its supporting tour. He continued as a member of Alter Bridge throughout that period, balancing work in both bands when schedules allowed. Marshall remains Alter Bridge’s bassist on the band’s self-titled 2026 album and continues to perform with the group.

Scott Phillips

Scott Phillips is Alter Bridge’s drummer and one of the band’s founding members. He formed the group with Mark Tremonti and Brian Marshall after previously serving as Creed’s drummer, and his playing has remained a constant element of Alter Bridge since 2004. Phillips combines a powerful hard-rock attack with the precision needed for the band’s changing meters, long arrangements, and progressive tendencies. His performances on songs such as “Blackbird,” “Isolation,” “Cry of Achilles,” and “Fable of the Silent Son” show how much of Alter Bridge’s musical weight depends on the rhythm section.

Phillips has played on every Alter Bridge studio album through the band’s self-titled 2026 release. Outside Alter Bridge, he returned to Creed during the band’s reunions and has also worked with the group Projected. His ability to move between the direct post-grunge approach of Creed and the heavier, more intricate arrangements of Alter Bridge has made him an essential part of both bands’ identities. More than two decades after Alter Bridge formed, Phillips remains the drummer behind the band’s unchanged four-member lineup.
