The Rolling Stones formed in London in 1962 and developed a sound rooted in American blues, rhythm and blues, and early rock and roll. The classic early lineup featured Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman, with pianist Ian Stewart remaining an essential musical contributor after leaving the official lineup.
The band’s early performances at clubs including the Crawdaddy helped establish its reputation for raw energy and an image that contrasted sharply with the more polished pop groups of the period. Recordings including “It’s All Over Now,” “The Last Time,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Get Off of My Cloud,” and “Paint It, Black” carried the Stones from the British blues scene to international stardom.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Rolling Stones released Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. Songs such as “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Brown Sugar,” “Wild Horses,” “Tumbling Dice,” and “Happy” became central to the band’s enduring reputation.
Brian Jones died in 1969 after leaving the band. Mick Taylor then joined and contributed to the group’s early-1970s recordings and tours before departing in 1974. Ronnie Wood became the band’s second guitarist in the mid-1970s and remained part of its long-running core alongside Jagger, Richards, and Watts.
The Stones continued to score major successes through Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, Tattoo You, Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon, and A Bigger Bang. Charlie Watts died in 2021, but the band continued recording and touring with drummer Steve Jordan.
Hackney Diamonds, released in 2023, became the Rolling Stones’ first studio album of original material since A Bigger Bang. Its songs included “Angry,” “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” “Bite My Head Off,” “Depending on You,” “Whole Wide World,” “Tell Me Straight,” and “Rolling Stone Blues.”
The Rolling Stones followed with Foreign Tongues on July 10, 2026. The 14-song album includes “Rough and Twisted,” “In the Stars,” “Jealous Lover,” “Ringing Hollow,” “You Know I’m No Good,” “Covered in You,” “Side Effects,” “Back in Your Life,” and a new recording of “Beautiful Delilah.” The iTunes bonus-track edition adds “Bad Luck Hideaway.” Every track has been placed in its proper alphabetical position below.
The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Their catalog reflects repeated reinvention while preserving the blues foundation, guitar interplay, songwriting partnership, and live-performance identity that have defined the band since its earliest years.
