Porcupine Tree originated in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, as a solo project created by Steven Wilson in 1987. Wilson’s early recordings combined psychedelic rock, progressive music, ambient sound, electronic experimentation, and an elaborate fictional history surrounding the imaginary band. The project gradually developed into a full group during the early 1990s, with Wilson joined by keyboardist Richard Barbieri, bassist Colin Edwin, and drummer Chris Maitland, who was later replaced by Gavin Harrison.

The debut album, On the Sunday of Life…, was released in 1992 as a collection drawn from Wilson’s early cassette recordings. Up the Downstair followed in 1993, while the extended compositions of The Sky Moves Sideways expanded the project’s atmospheric and psychedelic character. Signify, released in 1996, marked the first Porcupine Tree studio album developed from the beginning as the work of a functioning band.

Porcupine Tree reached a broader audience with Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun.
