Santana is inseparably connected to the cultural collision taking place in San Francisco during the late 1960s. Carlos Santana formed the Santana Blues Band in 1966, combining electric blues and rock with Afro-Latin percussion, jazz improvisation, and the rhythmic traditions he had absorbed while growing up in Mexico. Performances at Bay Area venues brought the group to the attention of promoter Bill Graham and prepared the band for its breakthrough appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969.

The band’s self-titled debut arrived shortly after Woodstock and introduced “Evil Ways,” “Jingo,” and “Soul Sacrifice” to a much wider audience. Abraxas followed in 1970 with “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen,” “Oye Cómo Va,” and “Samba Pa Ti,” while Santana III extended the group’s early run through “Everybody’s Everything,” “No One to Depend On,” and “Toussaint L’Overture.”

Santana’s music continued changing as personnel and musical interests shifted. Caravanserai, Welcome, Lotus, and Borboletta moved deeper into jazz fusion, spiritual music, and extended instrumental performance. Later albums including Amigos, Moonflower, Inner Secrets, Marathon, and Zebop! balanced that exploratory impulse with concise rock songs and enduring guitar showcases.

The band’s most dramatic commercial resurgence came with Supernatural in 1999. Collaborations with Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, CeeLo Green, and other artists connected Santana’s unmistakable guitar sound with a new generation. “Smooth,” “Maria Maria,” “Put Your Lights On,” and “Corazón Espinado” helped turn the album into a worldwide success and one of the most celebrated comeback records in rock history.

Collaboration remained central to Santana’s later work. Shaman, All That I Am, Guitar Heaven, Corazón, Santana IV, Africa Speaks, and Blessings and Miracles brought together singers, songwriters, producers, and instrumentalists from rock, blues, Latin music, jazz, pop, soul, and hip-hop. The collaborative album Power of Peace joined Santana with the Isley Brothers, while the In Search of Mona Lisa EP transformed Carlos Santana’s encounter with Leonardo da Vinci’s painting into three extended compositions and two edited versions.

The 2025 retrospective Sentient gathered eleven recordings connected by Carlos Santana’s instinctive sense of melody and spiritual purpose. The collection included collaborations with Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Miles Davis, Paolo Rustichelli, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, and Cindy Blackman Santana, along with three previously unreleased performances.

Carlos Santana’s influence extends beyond his recordings. The Santana lineup responsible for the band’s early breakthrough was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, while the Milagro Foundation, established by Carlos Santana and his family, has supported children through education, health, and arts programs. Across every phase of the band’s history, Santana’s music has treated technical skill, cultural exchange, and emotional expression as parts of the same creative language.
