Thomas Alan Waits emerged from Pomona, California, after absorbing R&B, soul, jazz, folk, country, and Mexican radio during his youth. His professional path began in the late 1960s while he worked as a doorman at the Heritage coffeehouse in San Diego. Listening to the performers there encouraged him to begin presenting his own material, and by 1971 he had attracted the attention of manager and publisher Herb Cohen.
Waits signed with Asylum Records and released Closing Time in 1973. The albums that followed—The Heart of Saturday Night, Nighthawks at the Diner, Small Change, Foreign Affairs, Blue Valentine, and Heartattack and Vine—built a nocturnal world of diners, bus stations, cheap hotels, bars, and characters living close to the edge. Songs such as “Ol’ ’55,” “Tom Traubert’s Blues,” “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis,” and “Jersey Girl” became central to his early catalog.
The soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola’s One from the Heart opened a new chapter in 1982. Waits wrote and performed the score with Crystal Gayle, creating songs and instrumental pieces that moved between romantic balladry and cinematic atmosphere. The project earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song Score.
Swordfishtrombones in 1983 marked his most dramatic reinvention. Working with Kathleen Brennan, who became his principal creative partner, Waits moved away from conventional piano-bar arrangements toward unusual percussion, pump organs, marimbas, found sounds, and fractured theatrical narratives. Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years completed a defining run that also produced “Downtown Train,” “Time,” “Hang On St. Christopher,” and “Way Down in the Hole.”
Waits continued combining music, theater, and film during the 1990s. Night on Earth supplied the score for Jim Jarmusch’s film, while Bone Machine won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The Black Rider grew from his stage collaboration with Robert Wilson and William S. Burroughs, joining Waits’s music to a dark theatrical adaptation of a German folktale.
Mule Variations returned Waits to the studio in 1999 and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2002, Alice and Blood Money brought two Robert Wilson theater projects into the album catalog. Real Gone, the three-disc Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, Glitter and Doom Live, and Bad as Me extended his work through 2011.
Later releases have drawn from performances, archival recordings, collaborations, and new standalone songs. The anniversary editions of Alice and Blood Money added previously unreleased live recordings in 2022. “Get Behind the Mule (Spiritual Version)” and Dale Crover’s “Glossolalia” appeared in 2024, followed in 2026 by “Boots on the Ground” with Massive Attack and the solo single “The Fly.”
Waits has also sustained an acting career with appearances in films by Jim Jarmusch, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Altman, Terry Gilliam, and the Coen brothers. His songs have been recorded by artists ranging from the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen to Rod Stewart, Marianne Faithfull, and Norah Jones, demonstrating how widely his writing travels even when his own recordings remain deliberately unconventional.
Across studio albums, soundtracks, theater scores, live performances, archival releases, covers, and collaborations, Tom Waits has built one of the most distinctive catalogs in American music. His gravelly voice, rhythmic invention, dark humor, and cinematic storytelling continue to make each period of his career sound connected without ever sounding predictable.
