Lionel Richie’s solo catalog brings together intimate love songs, polished pop and R&B, dance-floor anthems, soundtrack recordings, country collaborations, and some of the most recognizable melodies of the past five decades. This complete A-to-Z guide gathers his album tracks, remixes, duets, featured appearances, charity recordings, and major solo releases through July 2026.

Lionel Richie’s career took root in Tuskegee, Alabama, where his early fascination with music helped shape his remarkable career as a singer and songwriter. He first drew national attention as a member of the Commodores, who formed at Tuskegee Institute in the late 1960s and became one of Motown’s most successful groups.

The Commodores scored energetic funk hits including “Machine Gun” and “Brick House,” but Richie’s growing role as a songwriter helped move the band toward soulful ballads such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Sail On.” Those songs revealed the emotional directness and melodic style that would become central to his solo career.

Richie launched his solo career with Lionel Richie in 1982, a major commercial success that produced “Truly,” “You Are,” and “My Love.” “Truly” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, immediately establishing Richie as a major solo artist outside the Commodores.

His 1983 follow-up, Can’t Slow Down, expanded that success with “All Night Long (All Night),” “Hello,” “Stuck on You,” “Running with the Night,” and “Penny Lover.” The album blended pop, R&B, and Caribbean influences, was certified Diamond in the United States, and won the 1985 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Dancing on the Ceiling continued Richie’s dominance in 1986, with its title track becoming a major pop hit accompanied by a memorable MTV video. The album also included “Say You, Say Me,” written for the film White Nights, which won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

After a recording break, Richie returned in 1996 with Louder Than Words and followed it with Time, Renaissance, Just for You, Coming Home, and Just Go. His tenth studio album, Tuskegee, arrived in 2012 and revisited songs from his solo and Commodores years through country collaborations with Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, and other artists.

Tuskegee topped the Billboard 200, demonstrating Richie’s continued popularity across musical genres. The project also brought him back to the Southern musical roots reflected in both its title and its country-oriented collaborations.

Richie’s songwriting has extended well beyond his own recordings. He co-wrote “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson for USA for Africa in 1985, helping create a charity recording that raised millions of dollars for famine relief in Ethiopia, and he also wrote the hit “Lady” for Kenny Rogers.

His honors include multiple Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, an Academy Award, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017. Richie has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

Richie has remained visible to new generations through his role as a judge on the revived American Idol, which he joined in 2018. His warmth, experience, and personality have extended his public presence well beyond his recordings while introducing his music and career to younger audiences.
