Lionel Richie’s career took root in Tuskegee, Alabama, where his early fascination with music helped shape a life defined by melody, charisma, and exceptional songwriting talent. Richie first drew national attention as a member of the Commodores, who formed at Tuskegee Institute and developed from a funk-driven group into one of Motown’s most successful acts.
The Commodores scored energetic hits including “Machine Gun” and “Brick House,” but Richie’s growing role as a songwriter helped the band move toward soulful ballads such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” and “Sail On.” Those songs revealed the emotional directness and melodic elegance that would become central to his solo career.
Richie launched that solo career with Lionel Richie in 1982. The album produced “Truly,” “You Are,” and “My Love,” immediately establishing him as a major artist outside the Commodores. His 1983 follow-up, Can’t Slow Down, expanded that success through “All Night Long (All Night),” “Hello,” “Stuck on You,” “Running with the Night,” and “Penny Lover.”
Can’t Slow Down earned the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while Dancing on the Ceiling continued Richie’s dominance in 1986. “Say You, Say Me,” written for the film White Nights, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became one of his signature recordings.
After a recording break, Richie returned in 1996 with Louder Than Words and continued with Time, Renaissance, Just for You, Coming Home, and Just Go. His 2012 album Tuskegee revisited songs from his solo and Commodores years through country collaborations with artists including Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, and Darius Rucker.
Richie’s songwriting also reached far beyond his own albums. He co-wrote “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson for USA for Africa and wrote “Lady” for Kenny Rogers. His honors include Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
