The Steve Miller Band was formed in San Francisco in 1966 around guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Steve Miller. Born in Milwaukee and raised partly in Texas, Miller developed a deep background in blues and jazz before arriving in California. He also spent time in the Chicago blues scene, where he performed alongside musicians including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton, and Paul Butterfield. That foundation followed him into the psychedelic rock environment of the Bay Area, where the Steve Miller Band became part of the same thriving scene that produced Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.
The band’s debut album, Children of the Future, was released in 1968 and reflected the psychedelic and blues influences of the late-1960s San Francisco sound. Later that year, Sailor featured “Living in the U.S.A.” and “Quicksilver Girl,” helping the group reach a wider national audience. Through the early 1970s, albums including Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, Rock Love, and Recall the Beginning…A Journey from Eden expanded the band’s combination of blues, rock, psychedelia, and melodic songwriting.
A major turning point came in 1973 with The Joker. The title track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked a shift toward a more direct, radio-friendly rock sound. The album’s success set the stage for the band’s commercial peak. Released in 1976, Fly Like an Eagle produced “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” and the title track, while demonstrating Miller’s ability to combine blues, synthesizers, pop hooks, and imaginative studio production.
Book of Dreams followed in 1977 and continued that momentum with “Jet Airliner,” “Swingtown,” “Jungle Love,” and “The Stake.” Songs from The Joker, Fly Like an Eagle, and Book of Dreams became the foundation of Greatest Hits 1974-78, which received an RIAA Diamond Award and became one of the most successful compilation albums in American music.
The Steve Miller Band continued releasing albums through the 1980s, including Circle of Love, Abracadabra, Italian X Rays, and Living in the 20th Century. “Abracadabra” became another number-one single, demonstrating Miller’s ability to adapt to a changing pop and radio landscape. The broader recording catalog commonly associated with the group also includes Steve Miller’s 1988 solo album Born 2 B Blue.
Later releases included Wide River in 1993, followed by the blues-centered albums Bingo! and Let Your Hair Down. Miller also began opening his archives through Ultimate Hits, Welcome to the Vault, and J50: The Evolution of The Joker. Those collections introduced formally released archival songs, studio experiments, blues performances, and works in progress that broadened the documented history of his music.
Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. In 2025, the Library of Congress added the complete Fly Like an Eagle album to the National Recording Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance.
Beyond recording and touring, Miller has continued working in music education and preservation. He serves on the Board of Directors of Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he has helped develop programs examining the relationship between blues and jazz. He has also maintained connections with museums, universities, and arts organizations while supporting the study and presentation of American music.
The list below includes tracks from the Steve Miller Band’s studio albums, the Steve Miller solo album Born 2 B Blue, the non-album single “Sittin’ in Circles,” and unique songs formally released through later archival collections. Ordinary remixes, commentary tracks, demos of songs already represented by a principal version, and most live repetitions of existing songs are excluded.
